Uncoiling the cucumber's enigma

Friday, August 31, 2012

Captivated by a strange coiling behavior in the grasping tendrils of the cucumber plant, researchers at Harvard University have characterized a new type of spring that is soft when pulled gently and stiff when pulled strongly.

Instead of unwinding to a flat ribbon under stress, as an untwisted coil normally would, the cucumber's tendrils actually coil further. Understanding this counterintuitive behavior required a combination of head scratching, physical modeling, mathematical modeling, and cell biology?not to mention a large quantity of silicone.

The result, published in the August 31 issue of Science, describes the mechanism by which coiling occurs in the cucumber plant and suggests a new type of bio-inspired twistless spring.

Led by principal investigator L. Mahadevan, Lola England de Valpine Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Professor of Physics at Harvard, and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, the researchers were motivated by simple curiosity about the natural world.

"Nature has solved all kinds of energetic and mechanical problems, doing it very slowly and really getting it right," says lead author Sharon Gerbode, a former postdoctoral fellow at SEAS who has now advanced to a faculty position in the physics department at Harvey Mudd College. "But few people have studied biological mechanisms from the point of view of a physicist or an engineer. We barely had to scratch the surface with this question about the cucumber?how does it coil? What could be a simpler question? And what we actually found was this new kind of spring that no one had characterized before."

Well known to botanists and gardeners, the coiling tendrils of climbing plants like cucumbers, sweet peas, and grape vines allow the plants to hoist themselves up towards sunlight and secure themselves tightly to existing structures like trees or trellises. Yet the biological and physical mechanism of this coiling, at the level of the plant's cells and tissues, has remained a mystery.

A cucumber tendril begins as a straight stem that elongates until it finds something to latch onto. Then, secured at both ends, it forms a left-handed helix and a right-handed helix, joined at the center by a "perversion"?Charles Darwin's strikingly Victorian term for the point at which the coiling changes direction.

"It's easy to create one of these twistless springs with a telephone cord," says Gerbode, "and they're annoying. But with the phone cord, you can pull on both ends and it will straighten out into a flat ribbon. What's strange about the cucumber tendril is that if you pull on the ends, it actually overwinds, adding more turns to both helices."

To explore the mechanism for this behavior, Gerbode and her Harvard colleagues took a closer look at the cells and tissue types inside the tendril.

A fibrous ribbon, made of thread-like cells called gelatinous fiber (g-fiber) cells, runs the length of each tendril. Two cell layers thick, this ribbon appears to provide the force required for the tendril to form a helix without the benefit of muscles. If the cells on one side of such a ribbon were to contract, the researchers thought, it would force the ribbon to curve and coil.

Gerbode and her coauthor Joshua Puzey (Ph.D. '12), who was studying organismic and evolutionary biology in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at the time, tried to reconstruct this fiber ribbon with a silicone model. They stretched a sheet of elastic silicone, secured the ends, and then spread a thin layer of silicone caulk across its surface. When the caulk cured, they cut a thin strip off the model, held both ends, and watched it coil into a pair of perfect helices. When they pulled on both ends, however, it simply unraveled and lay flat, adding no extra coils as they had hoped.

"This is when I spent a lot of time pulling on telephone cords," Gerbode admits.

The clue, as it turns out, was inside the g-fiber cells. These cells have been studied extensively in trees; they have the ability to shrink or elongate, thanks to a special type of architecture in the cell wall.

"What we think may be happening is that the inner cell layer of the tendril has more lignin in it, which is a sort of glue that gives cell walls stiffness and holds together the cellulose microfibrils, which are like rebar in the cells," explains Puzey. "We thought this stiffness must be related to the coiling somehow."

To test this idea, Gerbode and Puzey glued a fabric ribbon to one side of their silicone model and a copper wire to the other side. At last, the silicone strip formed a pair of helices that overwound, just like the cucumber tendril.

The structure they stumbled upon is a spring made of two joined, opposite-handed helices whose bending stiffness is higher than their twisting stiffness. In other words, to form this specific structure, the materials involved have to make it easier for the ribbon to twist axially than to change its curvature. Through mathematical models developed by Mahadevan and coauthor Andrew McCormick (a physics graduate student in GSAS), the team was able to fully understand the parameters and synthesize a simple principle for the design of these springs.

The final stage in the research was to address the biological implications. By extracting the fiber ribbon from a cucumber tendril, Mahadevan's group had already noticed that moisture was playing a role in the spring's behavior. As the extracted ribbon dried out, its stiffness increased and it coiled more tightly. Lignin is also known to be hydrophobic, repelling water. What's more, Mahadevan's team measured the mechanical response of young tendrils and older ones, finding that the older tendrils put up much more resistance to pulling, a fact that they explained using a combination of theory and computer simulations.

Though the group has not yet explored these findings from an evolutionary perspective, they hypothesize that the mature coil structure allows the climbing plants just the right amount of structural flexibility.

"You want the plant to make a nice strong, secure connection, but you also don't want it to be too stiff or to snap," explains Gerbode. "You want it to have a little bit of flexibility so that if the wind blows or an animal brushes past it, it doesn't break. So one possibility is that this overwinding allows the plant to easily accommodate small motions, but then if something really serious happens it can get very stiff and protect itself."

To further study the evolutionary significance of the tendril's morphology, researchers would have to study the coils in numerous species and attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of that characteristic. Mahadevan suggests that such a project could provide important ecological insights.

"The advantage of using a tendril is that the plant saves on complex machinery to build structural supports such as trunks and branches," Mahadevan says. "The disadvantage is that it must depend on other species to build these supports. Thus, tendrils are an adaptation that is likely to develop only in regions replete with vegetation that can provide supports and where competition for resources is intense.

"The real question remains this: how difficult is it to evolve such tendril-like solutions?"

Now that nature has done the hard work, though, Mahadevan suggests that the benefits of understanding cucumber coils might be useful in technology?but hastens to add that this work was driven by pure curiosity, not with an end product in mind.

"This is likely to be useful anywhere we need a spring with a tunable mechanical response," he says.

On Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, Yosemite officials announced a second person had died of a rare, rodent-borne disease after staying in one of Yosemite National Park's most popular lodging areas, prompting federal officials to step up efforts to locate and warn recent visitors. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)

(AP) ? Up to 10,000 people who were guests in certain lodging cabins at Yosemite National Park might have been exposed to a deadly mouse-borne virus, park officials confirmed Friday as rangers handled a slew of calls from frightened visitors.

Park concessionaire Delaware North Co. sent letters and emails this week to nearly 3,000 people who reserved the insulated "Signature" cabins between June and August, warning them that they might have been exposed.

The cabins hold up to four people, and park spokesman Scott Gediman said Friday that means up to 7,000 more visitors might have been exposed to the virus that so far has killed two people and sickened four others.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 calls a day are coming into Yosemite's new hantavirus hotline as visitors frightened about the growing outbreak of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome call seeking answers.

"We're reaching out and they are reaching out to us, and we are trying in every way shape and form to be transparent and forthright," he said. "We want to tell people this is what we know. The most important thing is the safety of park visitors and employees."

On Thursday, the California Department of Public Health confirmed that a total of six people have contracted the disease at Yosemite, up from four suspected cases earlier in the week.

Alerts sent to state and county public health agencies, as well as local doctors and hospitals, have turned up other suspected cases that have not yet been confirmed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Additional suspected cases are being investigated from multiple health jurisdictions," the CDC said in an advisory issued to health care providers.

The illness that begins as flu-like symptoms can take six weeks to incubate before rapid acute respiratory and organ failure.

There is no cure, and anyone exhibiting the symptoms must be hospitalized. More than 36 percent of people who contract the rare illness will die from it.

All of the victims confirmed so far stayed in the high-end, insulated "Signature" tent cabins in the park's historic Curry Village section between mid-June and early July.

Park officials worked quickly to disinfect all 400 of the Curry Village cabins when the outbreak first was detected earlier this month. When the outbreak was narrowed to the 91 double-walled insulated cabins, the California Department of Public Health ordered them shut down Tuesday.

Park officials said the double-walled design of those particular cabins made it easy for mice to nest between the walls. The disease is carried in the feces, urine and saliva of deer mice and other rodents and carried on airborne aerosol particles and dust.

As the busy Labor Day weekend launches and word about the outbreak spread, some guests were cancelling lodging reservations at the park. But Gediman says others on waiting lists for hard-to-get accommodations are snapping them up.

The hantavirus outbreak occurred despite park officials' efforts to step up protections.

A 2010 report from the state health department warned park officials that rodent inspection efforts should be increased after a visitor to the Tuolumne Meadows area of the park fell ill.

The report revealed 18 percent of mice trapped for testing at various locations around the park were positive for hantavirus.

"Inspections for rodent infestations and appropriate exclusion efforts, particularly for buildings where people sleep, should be enhanced," it said.

The park's new hantavirus policy, enacted April 25, was designed to provide a safe place, "free from recognized hazards that may cause serious physical harm or death."

The 91 insulated, high-end canvas cabins in the century-old Curry Village are new to the park. They were constructed in 2009 to replace some that had been closed or damaged after parts of Curry Village, which sits below the 3,000-foot Glacier Point promontory, were determined to be in a rock-fall hazard zone.

Upon taking them apart for cleaning, park employees found evidence of mouse nests in the insulation.

The deer mice most prone to carrying the virus can squeeze through holes just one-quarter-inch in diameter. They are distinguished from solid-colored house mice by their white bellies and gray and brown bodies.

In 2011, half of the 24 U.S. hantavirus cases ended in death. But since 1993, when the virus first was identified, the average death rate is 36 percent, according to the CDC.

Persia ? June 2012 |

Following on from Anatolia, we were in the mood for more food from that part of the world (and beyond!). We spied a graduation dinner deal on 5pm for Persia on Great Western Road, neither of us were graduating but I didn?t see any other dinners with mortar boards or gowns and no one asked for proof so?

To begin,

Spicy Pomegranate chicken wings

Spicy Pomegranate chicken wings

Spicy chicken wings (?4.90) in a pomegranate sauce, which weren?t all that spicy and I?m not sure where the pomegranate was either but 4 char-grilled chicken wings with salad still made for a decent starter.

Dolmeh felfel

Dolmeh felfel

A large stuffed green?pepper (?5.50) delicately spiced with a rather random mish-mash of salady bits around the edge. It was all tasty though.

Ghaimeh bademjaan

Ghaimeh bademjaan

For the mains, we both opted for curried lamb stews and?Ghaimeh bademjaan (?9.90) consisted of diced lamb with chana dal and cinnamon in a light tomato sauce with baby aubergine, served with white saffron rice. Again, I don?t know if my?taste-buds?were failing me but I couldn?t detect any cinnamon or saffron, but once again it was still tasty.

Ghormeh sabzi

Ghormeh sabzi

Ghormeh sabzi (?9.90), in addition to lamb it contained?spinach, parsley, green onions, coriander and shanbalileh (whatever that is!?) with dried lime, red kidney beans and served again with saffron rice. I ordered this because it looked unusual, and it was?a bit too unusual. It was very?green!?My taste-buds were?definitely?up to no good, all I could taste were the parsley and coriander, which I like in moderation, but this was a bit overkill. The lamb was cooked nicely so I ate it up but I don?t think I?ll be ordering this again.

Onto dessert?

Strawberry Cheesecake

Strawberry Cheesecake

I love cheesecake (?3.90) and this was decent but tasted shop-bought.

Baghlava

Baghlava

The Baghlava (?3.50) was a bit hard for me, I was hoping for soft and syrupy not crunchy.

Total cost for 3 courses and a drink each ? ?33.80. The?prices in brackets are the regular A La Carte prices though and not the special price we paid for the 3 courses (as that menu is no longer available). Overall decent food but not great though service was?friendly and attentive.

Retail sales up 2.24% in 1st semester of '12 | News is my Business

In absolute terms, the year-over-year retail sales increase was by about $383 million.

Puerto Rico?s retail activity showed a positive upturn during the first six months of the year, totaling $17.5 billion, or a 2.24 percent increase over the same period in 2011, government agency Puerto Rico Trade and Export announced Monday.

In absolute terms, the year-over-year increase was by about $383 million, the agency noted.

?These data reflect consumer confidence in the local economy,? said Economic Development and Commerce Secretary Jos? P?rez-Riera, who also heads Puerto Rico Trade and Export. ?The months of May and June 2012 reflected increases of 2.58 percent and 2.15 percent respectively when compared to the previous year.?

?The economy continues to stabilize and retail sales is another area that lets us see such growth. The first six months of this year all reflected growth compared with 2011. With these increases we see that consumers are more confident in the economy,? he said.

According to the sales report, establishments that achieved the highest increase in sales when compared with 2011 were new and used motor vehicles, with a 21.93 percent jump, auto and home goods stores, with 8.83 percent growth, paint, glass and wallpaper stores with a 6.78 percent jump, and hardware stores, with a 5.41 percent growth.

Meanwhile, seven of the island?s nine regions of commercial activity reflected sales increases, while Aguadilla and Bayam?n reported drops of 2.14 percent and 1.12 percent, respectively.

Dwarf pair pump out gravity waves

Researchers have spotted visible-light evidence for one of astronomy's most elusive targets - gravity waves - in the orbit of a pair of dead stars.

Until now, these ripples in space-time, first predicted by Einstein, have only been inferred from radio-wave sources.

But a change in the orbits of two white dwarf stars orbiting one another 3,000 light-years away is further proof of the waves that can literally be seen.

A study to be reported in Astrophysical Journal Letters describes the pair.

Gravitational waves were a significant part of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which viewed space itself as a malleable construct, and the gravity of massive objects as a force that could effectively warp it.

Catching sight of an actual gravity wave, however, is a tricky business; their effects are far too small to be measured with Earth-bound experiments.

But the wider Universe provides a laboratory in which the indirect effects of gravity waves can be measured.

Six-second switch

In principle, any two massive objects orbiting one another can emit gravitational waves, slowly losing the momentum of their orbits into the waves.

The effect is to slightly change the size of the orbits, and the time it takes to complete them.

A measurement of a minuscule change in the orbits of rapidly rotating neutron stars called pulsars garnered the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics.

But pulling off the same trick with visible light has until now eluded researchers.

It is the extreme nature of the pair of white dwarf stars known as J0651 - each a substantial fraction of our Sun's mass orbiting each other at a distance just a third that between the Earth and Moon - that increases the magnitude of the gravity waves.

As members of the same team reported in Astrophysical Journal in 2011, the pair orbit each other in less than 13 minutes.

Since that discovery, the team has been keenly watching the pair "eclipse" one another, with each briefly blocking out the other's light as seen from Earth.

Over a period of 13 months, the team saw the orbital period reduce by some six seconds - a tremendous rate of change, and one that was easily measured.

"A lot of these indirect measurements have taken people years, mostly because the orbits are so much longer," explained lead author of the study, JJ Hermes from the University of Texas at Austin.

Mr Hermes told BBC News that he liked the idea that such a groundbreaking result was established in part by using a telescope nearly as old as Einstein's theory: the Otto Struve 2.1m telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.

"There have been 30 years of using radio telescopes and timing pulsars, but this is the first time we've been able to detect the influence of gravitational wave radiation using an optical telescope," he told BBC News.

The team will continue to watch the pair's tightening orbit, which should reduce by another 20 seconds by next May. The result will also help guide observations from "direct detection" experiments.

These, such as the proposed eLisa project, aim to measure the tiny relative movements of vastly separated detectors as gravitational waves pass - a final, irrefutable proof that the waves are what relativity predicted so long ago.

"It would be really nice confirmation if we got one of these laser interferometer missions going - we'd know exactly what to look for," Mr Hermes said.

"We've crunched the numbers, and eLisa would be able to detect this thing in about a week."

The Different Approaches Used In IT Asset Recovery | Registry ...

IT asset recovery, also referred to as information technology asset recovery, is a process that allows to retrieve the data that have been mistakenly erased by an individual. For instance, let us say that a person has just deleted an important file and wants to retrieve it. The person will have trouble finding the file because the hardware of the computer will mark the file as no longer existing while in fact the file is still located at some area in the computer.?IT asset recovery?is a procedure that permits the gathering of all the files that have been discarded by the user and marked as nonexistent by the computer. There are 3 main techniques that are employed to perform IT asset recovery: automated backup and recovery; software recovery; and data recovery services.

Automated backup is one of the three approaches that both individuals and business can use to perform IT asset recovery. Indeed, there are many different vendors that propose programs that have the ability to back up sensitive data. Automated backups come in distinct formats, there are those that are built to repeatedly back up the network servers, those that are designed to back up the desktop program of the consumers and those that serve to back up the hard drive of a personal computer. Evidently, the price that the vendor charges to provide the automated backup services varies depending on the type of the automated backup service that the customer requests.

Software recovery is a list of programs that are sold in packages by the vendor and help the user fix their operating system whenever a crash or accident occurs. This second type of IT asset recovery approaches may be used by the individuals whose computer is not equipped with any automated backup. Because it may happen that the hard drive experience a system failure, software recovery has been designed to assist the user to recover all their data after the accident.

Data recovery services are the final type of IT asset recovery that an individual may have access to. These services are often available at the majority of computer repair stores. These stores possess a staff of highly skilled technicians who have the knowledge required to perform all sorts of repairs on the computer and on the laptop. In addition to the technical skills and the knowledge of its personnel, computer repair outlets usually possess a variety of tools and accessories that serve the purpose of fixing computers and laptops but that are hardly accessible to clients. In some computer repair stores, data recovery services are the priciest service that a client may request. Luckily, there are now some data recovery services that can cost less than a hundred dollars to the customers.

There are two main reasons for which a computer hard drive would fail: logical failure and mechanical failure. When a logical failure happens, that means that either the file system was mistakenly formatted or the file system is corrupt. When a mechanical failure occurs, that means that at least one of the components of the computer?s hard drive has been impaired, which stops the computer from working properly. In either case, requesting data recovery services should normally enable the person to retrieve their important data. If it is believed that the hard drive is having a serious mechanical failure, then the individual will need to request the help of a data recovery service professional, which means that at least five hundred dollars will be paid to recover the data. If it is a logical failure, the cost of retrieving the data should be between forty dollars and two hundred dollars.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar shows its mid-range face at Best Buy

Android Central

The Samsung SCH-i200 Jasper had been teased earlier this summer as a mid-range phone due for Verizon. It has now slipped its way quietly into Best Buy Mobile as the Galaxy Stellar with nary a peep from Verizon nor Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy Stellar boasts a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, LTE connectivity, a 4-inch 800 x 480 display, and a 3.2 megapixel camera on the back. While those specs hardly conjure up the descriptor of "stellar", it is back-to-school season, and there are plenty of kids looking for something with LTE and a forgiving pricetag.

Anyhoo, the Samsung Galaxy Stellar is available over here for $449.99 without a contract. Other leaks suggest that it'll be available for $99.99 with a two-year agreement on Verizon. That leak also says there's going to be some kind of "Starter Mode", presumably to help new folks learn their way around a smartphone, and pimps out availability of Amazon apps for some reason. Anyone looking for a cheap phone with LTE and ICS?

10 Deadly Internet Marketing Myths | David Wood's MLM Marketing ...

Internet Marketing Myths

You?ve read all about it. You?ve heard it all before?

That Internet Marketers just lay around in their?pajamas?all day barely working. That they spend all their time on the beach doing whatever the heck they want, travelling the world and driving expensive cars.

Or that the Internet Marketing lifestyle is working 2 hours/week making an easy 6 figures a year on ?autopilot?. The reality is most of what you read online about online marketing is total hyped up B.S. designed to get you to buy some info product.

Today I wanted to dismiss a bunch of deadly Internet Marketing myths and divulge some real information that you need to hear about the Internet Marketing niche.

1. Most Internet Marketers Are Full Of Shit

This piece of information is valuable beyond belief if you?re just getting started in the online marketing world or wanting to become another Frank Kern or Ryan Deiss.

The problem with the majority of Internet Marketers is that they all make their money in the Internet Marketing niche. The Internet Marketing niche basically consists of Make Money Online nonsense and traffic/lead/customer generation bullshit.

It?s Internet Marketers teaching other Internet Marketers Internet Marketing, how retarded is that (LOL)?

Internet Marketers have serious skills. They know how to market on Facebook, get top rankings and how to dominate social media. But what do they moronically do with their knowledge?

They sell it in the form of cheap info products to OTHER Internet Marketers for $7-$10 on the low end up to $50-$200 on the high end. They giveaway all their secrets to other Internet Marketers because every Internet Marketer wants to be another guru. The truth is you?d make 100 times more money using Internet Marketing outside of the Internet Marketing niche.

Don?t get dragged into the Internet Marketing community. It?s essentially this?incestuous?pit of money grabbers who all sell, buy and promote each others products.

99% of Internet Marketers in the Internet Marketing niche don?t have real businesses. They simply sell stuff to other Internet Marketers which is an awful business model since there?s 1000 times more money outside of IM.

Most IM products are based on theory since they don?t have real businesses to test the theory on. (I k

2. Internet Marketing Is Easy

Internet Marketing is by no means easy. If you?re building an IM business from scratch on a very limited budget it can take years to succeed ? the opposite of easy. Starting an online business isn?t so different from starting an offline business.

Internet Marketing requires hard work, dedication and strategic thinking just like anything else. There are no push button softwares that make millions; not yet anyway.

3. Internet Marketing Is Free

Internet Marketing is free? That?s just ridiculous. Internet Marketing could possibly cost nothing. I mean if you really wanted to build an online business from nothing, and I mean $0.00 ? you could but it?d take you several years.

Whether you want to do that to prove a point or something, I don?t know ? but it?s a terrible idea. If you have no money, get a job, borrow it or dig into your savings ? don?t start from scratch.

There are costs associated with every business and while Internet Marketing may not be free; you certainly can start it on a shoe string budget. For around $1000, you can start an online business quite easily ? but still not $0.00.

4. You Barely Have To Work

I would say that Internet Marketers spend more time working than most 9-5?ers. Not because they have to, because they want to.

You can quite easily work 2-4 hours a week and make a small living on the Internet. However, Internet Marketing is fun, enjoyable and addictive. That?s why Internet Marketers work for so many hours and late nights.

They either haven?t figured it out yet or are seriously enjoying themselves. In the beginning; expect to work hard and long hours. Once you?re properly setup, you can work as much as you want to.

5. You Can Just Take Off, Travel The World And Keep Getting Paid

This is what drags a lot of folks into the online world of marketing. The hype says Internet Marketing will just pay you automatically without you ever working. While that may be true only once you?ve built a system, the maximum you can really ?take off? for is 2-3 months. After that your business will probably collapse.

Internet Marketing is constantly evolving, if you don?t predict what?s to come, listen to the signals and adapt prior to a major shift ? you can lose everything.

6. Internet Marketing Is A Scam

Yes, there are hundreds of scam artists on the Internet. Yes, there are too many people selling sketchy black hat tricks, methods and software?

?and yes ? there are countless Nigerians out there waiting to steal your hard earned money. The fact is the offline world is crawling with far more scams than the Internet. Fortunately online scams are easy to point out.

With enough research you can find high quality products that give real value?

?and yes ? Internet Marketers do make money from completely legal, safe products that help real people.

7. $100,000 In 30 Days

Unless you?re a genius or have hundreds of thousands behind you, there?s no such thing as Instant Internet Riches. Anyone who guarantees your success is not to be trusted. Normal people are making fortunes online, but none of them overnight ? despite what Clickbank sales pages might say.

8. Internet Marketing Is For Computer Geeks

This one is quite annoying. Just because I make a living online does not mean I know anything about computers. I probably know slightly more than most people only because of the sheer number of hours I spend online each week.

I know the very basics and that?s all that is required.

Windows Explorer, Google Chrome, Gmail, Downloading, Saving, Zipping/Unzipping, Attaching Files and Microsoft Word are all you really need to understand. The complex stuff like web design and programming should always be outsourced.

9. It?s All About Traffic

More traffic means more money, right? Traffic is all that matters, right?

No and definitely not. Traffic is for scaling up your online business. More traffic doesn?t directly translate into more revenue.

Online marketing is all about conversions. Converting traffic into leads and leads into customers. Conversions are 100 times more important than traffic generation. Any idiot can generate visitors, but only the masters are able to persuade A LOT of them to buy.

Websites that get 100 visitors/day can generate far more revenue than sites getting 1000 visitors/day or more. It?s all in the conversions. Traffic is only useful when you have the system in place to convert it.

Not all traffic will convert with your offer. You can shape your offer for a particular group of people, but ultimately you need to shape your marketing to capture right people and not the other way around.

In Prosperity,

David Wood

How do you deal with a $45,000 hospital bill? - The Help Desk - CNN

A 61-year-old neighbor of mine in Oregon recently incurred a $45,000 hospital bill. She is unemployed and uninsured. The hospital gave her some financial assistance, but because she has some savings, including an IRA worth $220,000, the hospital argues that she has the resources to pay the balance. What should she do? Should she withdraw funds from her IRA, resort to a reverse mortgage or risk defaulting and being turned over to a collection agency? ? L. Wilson

Your neighbor should negotiate the terms of a payment plan with the hospital, spreading the payments over as many years as possible to make them easier to fit into her budget. "Don't let this go to a collection agency," warns Anna Sergunina, with Mainstreet Financial Planning in San Mateo, Calif. "It's a lot easier to negotiate with the hospital than with the collection agency."

Your neighbor doesn't have many other options. If she drew on her IRA assets, she'd have to pay income tax on the withdrawal, which likely would add between $6,750 and $11,250 to her cost, depending on her tax bracket. A reverse mortgage is out: They are only for people age 62 or older. One possibility she could consider is a home equity line of credit. "Interest rates are low," says Sergunina. "But she might have difficulty qualifying because she's unemployed and has very little income."

If collection agencies do get involved, she should know that her Social Security benefits and IRA assets are safe. Social Security payments can't be garnished, except by the federal government, and in Oregon, IRA assets are protected from creditors (the rules vary from state to state).

A Tale of Four Thornes: Parties and Popcorn

I had looked forward to this past Saturday for months. I absolutely LOVE baby showers, and I could not wait to attend two for two very special women in my life. It was also my first day away from my crazy life with two kids, so I was looking forward to a little break. :) Jay was Mr. Mom for the day, and it was his first time with two little rug rats.

The Ashford Park girls and I threw Jamie a surprise shower at our local spa where we were pampered with pedicures. Jamie is having her second boy, so she told us that she did not need a shower. We look for any excuse to get together, so we planned a surprise shower to welcome Baby Brewer. Everyone brought yummy appetizers, and the girls and I loved having some time together to catch up!

I tried a recipe from Pinterest for a strawberry and goat cheese bruschetta. It was DELICIOUS!

Mommy-to-Be?

I left Jamie's shower to head to Val's baby shower at her cousin Chrisi's house. Baby Charles will make his debut in October, and we cannot wait for another baby to join the group. Val's family flew up from Florida, and I always have the best time with them. They are such a fun and loud bunch!

How cute is Prego Val?

The Grandmothers-to-Be

Val's Family from Florida

After my wonderful husband watched two kids all day, I suggested that he stay home while I took the kids to an outdoor movie at our park. Even though the movie started past Tuttle's bedtime, I thought it would be a special treat.? I picked up some Subway for dinner, and after sunset the movie started. While most kids could not sit still, Tuttle was MESMERIZED! At 10pm, I decided it was late enough even though the movie was not over, and I piled the stroller full of two kids and all our bags and headed home.

I love that our neighborhood has started to host events that really bring the community together.

* Maggie went to the movie, but she was either in the Moby Wrap or being passed around so much that I did not snap a picture!

It really was a perfect Saturday!

The Positives of Getting an Online Degree

Today, many employers require a degree before they'll even consider a candidate for a job. However, going to college requires a substantial investment of time and money, and many people are stuck at dead-end jobs because they can't afford to pay for an education.

Today, that problem is a thing of the past. Thanks to online schools, improving job skills has never been easier. An online degree is a convenient and effective way to enhance any resume, and with hundreds of programs available across the country, it's never been easier to find an online school for you.

Are you thinking of getting an online degree? Here are a few of the advantages that an online degree offers:

Convenience: Normally, going to college represents the time commitment of a full-time job. Classes take up several hours of time per day, and homework assignments and studying take up several more hours on top of that. People with other commitments in life can't afford to spend that much time getting a degree, which is why online schools offer an effective middle ground - students can choose exactly when they want to work on their classes and set up a schedule that works for them. Getting an online degree is set up to be as convenient as possible.

Affordable: Since students of online schools aren't attending regular classes or using the facilities of a physical university, tuition is often priced at a more affordable rate. You might get the same degree as somebody who attended traditional university courses, but you could end up paying significantly less for your online degree.

Quality learning: The internet has made it easy to teach even the most complex lessons across vast distances. Instead of reading through textbooks on your own and trying to figure out the mysteries of the world, today's online schools often feature videos and other online information that makes it easy for students to learn the material. You might even be able to talk with your professor over webcam to enhance the learning experience.

Effective communication: The days of using snail mail to hand in assignments are far in the past. Today, online schools use the internet and email to communicate with students. If you need to ask a teacher a question, it's just a quick email away. Some online schools even have video chat-rooms, virtual lecture halls, and other tools that use modern technology to its full potential.

Online degrees are an effective way to expand your education. If you've constantly delayed going back to school due to other commitments in life, then an online school provides affordable convenience that you can trust. With hundreds of different degrees available online, there has never been a better time to pursue an online degree.

These people are likely to purchase a tax software program ...

Credit unions are in most cases smaller which in turn may allow you to discuss your lending needs with upper executives that you normally would not have access to in larger banking institutions. or you may be required to pay just the interest on the amount that you have used. Business owners usually have to face the problem of bounced checks received from customers. You will need to fully understand some crucial small business tax guidelines if you would like to avoid bowling alley tax debt. When you apply for any type of credit, whether it is a credit card or even a personal loan, the lender needs to be able to determine how much debt you will be able to handle once you are approved, in addition to the debt you already obligated to pay. However, such situations occur frequently.

To establish your home equity line of credit, your lender will have a specific formula that is used with each borrower based on their credit score

When the skating rink pays taxes, it doesnt make sense that the individuals who own the company pay taxes too for the same concepts. Always make sure that you have a backup lender even though you may feel absolutely sure that this lender will give you the credit lines you are seeking. Whether youve lived in a home for years or just purchased it, youll get the urge to make improvements.

The form you use to do this depends on how your flower shop is organized. To accurately report and pay taxes pizza shop owners are encouraged to follow these helpful preparation tricks. Special small pizza shop tax deductions are granted for home based steak house establishments. Besides the above stated sources, you can also try your luck with the state of the union tax incentives.

I just recently got started with improving my credit this year.

These second mortgages also offer crucial tax advantages and in many cases provide you with a fixed amount of money that is also repayable over a fixed period of time. If you dont take immediate skating rink tax relief action to deal with past due payroll taxes or unpaid employment taxes (and their escalating penalties) and get yourself on and IRS payment plan or IRS installment plan, you will find yourself out of business. A CPA can keep a home remodeling business financial ventures in order, clearly underlining the problem areas and discrepancies.

Do you maintain accurate books and records? The amount of time you devote to operating the business.

If you decide not to use this lender, then perhaps consider one that wants your business. As with the HELOC, a lender will issue you a advance in exchange for a 2nd trust deed on the property. in certain cases the timing for getting certain docs signed can control how it affects the tax losses you can count in a given tax year.

Utilizing the Accrual Approach, you often report revenue in the tax year it is earned and deduct expenses in the tax year you incur them

In fact, depending on how you structure your repayment, the schedule usually calls for you to pay the line of credit off in equal payments so you never have to guess what will be expected down the road. Note If you do not pay your tax through withholding, or do not pay enough tax, you may have to pay an estimated tax.

The tax system in the United States is extremely complicated with various kinds of tax laws applicable to people such as sales tax, employment tax, property tax and many other local and federal tax laws. These are considered your finance cost. They can also enroll in tax preparing courses and invest in tax software programs. Which means that the actual homeowners should steer clear of the kind of investing which bears these phones the actual edges of the credit rating limitations.

Your Word-Is It Impeccable?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Assorted Magnetic WordsIf you have frequented a bookstore in the past several years, you may be familiar with the small book by Don Miguel Ruiz entitled, The Four Agreements. Most anyone could easily read the book cover to cover while standing in the store, but when you read it with awareness and openness, the words will stay on your mind and begin to impact your thoughts and your life as they expand and shift your mindfulness like water pouring through sand.

The first agreement and truly powerful one is ?Be impeccable with your word. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.?

The term word means more than the words you speak or write. It means not only the expression of words and beliefs you project out to others verbally and non-verbally, but also inwardly, through self talk. The Latin origin of impeccable means ?to be without sin?. Obviously, being impeccable with your word is easy to say, but requires a lifetime of practice each day to reach mastery. The words you say when you are not mindful are based on the conditioning you have received over your entire life. As humans, we are conditioned by a reward/punishment mindset, both verbally and physically. As adults, negative self talk such as ?I?m fat? is sinful, limiting and damaging according to the definition of impeccable. Saying, ?I will workout five times this week? means you are breaking these negative patterns and approaching your words from the spirit of love. If we can hurt ourselves internally this much with words, just imagine all the ways we hurt or sin against others in the words we express outwardly and unconsciously on a daily basis.

Negativity can quickly expand when you choose to express your opinion of someone or something outside of truth and love. Words that are judgmental and critical ultimately stem from our own underlying fears. Gossip is rampant in spoken word and written word. Hang out at the office water cooler, turn on the news or pick up a magazine at the check out counter of a grocery store and you will see that we have become a society conditioned to gossip. It is why we often find it difficult to avoid in our own personal conversations. It takes consistent mindfulness of integrity and self control to avoid.

As you and I increase our awareness and mindfulness, we begin to use the power of the word in the direction of truth and love. This means that we start by letting go of past hurts and conditioning that no longer serve us through the power of forgiveness. Its about forgiving others and more importantly, about forgiving yourself. Through forgiveness, you are able to reframe the past and let it go in order to clear a new path for truth and love to flow inside your mind and body. As it flows in, you can then begin to express truth and love each moment with integrity and say ?only what you mean in your words, expressions and actions. Being impeccable in your word begins when you allow truth and love to replace unforgiveness, fear and judgement.

This week, I am setting an intention to pause to remember the power of the first agreement before I speak and to use my words in the direction of truth and love both in how I talk to myself and to others. Please join me on this journey to change ourselves and the world, one word, one expression and one action at a time.

New wave of technologies possible after ground-breaking analysis tool developed

A revolutionary tool created by scientists at the University of Sheffield has enabled researchers to analyse nanometer-sized devices without destroying them for the first time, opening the door to a new wave of technologies.

The nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus developed by the University's Department of Physics and Astronomy will allow for further developments and new applications for nanotechnology which is increasingly used in harvesting solar energy, computing, communication developments and also in the medical field.

Scientists can now analyse nanostructures at an unprecedented level of detail without destroying the materials in the process, a limitation researchers across the world faced before the Sheffield experts' breakthrough.

Dr Alexander Tartakovskii, who led a team of researchers, said: "We have developed a new important tool for microscopy analysis of nanostructures. The very tiny quantities of matter used in nanostructures the behavior of electrons and photons is governed by new quantum effects, quite different from what happens in bulk materials.

"Development requires careful structural analysis, in order to understand how the nanostructures are formed, and how we can build them to enhance and control their useful properties. Existing structural analysis methods, key for the research and development of new materials, are invasive: a nanostructure would be irreversibly destroyed in the process of the experiment, and, as a result, the important link between the structural and electronic or photonic properties would usually be lost. This limitation is now overcome by our new techniques, which rely on inherently non-invasive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probing."

The results open a new way of nano-engineering, a full characterisation of a new material and new semiconductor nano-device without destroying them meaning more research and development and device fabrication processes.

Dr Tarakovskii added: "We have developed new techniques which allowed unprecedented sensitivity and enhancement of the NMR signal in nanostructures. Particular nanostructures of interest in our research are semiconductor quantum dots, which are researched widely for their promising photonic applications, and potential for the use in a new type of computer hardware employing quantum logic.

"The result of our experiments was quite unexpected and changed our understanding of the architecture of these nanomaterials: we learned new information about the chemical composition of quantum dots, and also how atom alignment inside the dots deviates from that of a perfect crystal. Importantly, many more measurements of optical and magnetic properties can be done on the same quantum dots which have undergone the NMR probing."

The development of the new techniques and all experimental work was carried out by Dr Evgeny Chekhovich in the group of Dr Alexander Tartakovskii at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Sheffield. Quantum dot samples used in this work have also been fabricated in Sheffield, in the EPSRC National Facility for III-V Semiconductor Technology.

Fla. prepares for Isaac on eve of GOP convention

MIAMI (AP) ? Officials organized shelters and urged vacationers to leave the Florida Keys as Tropical Storm Isaac approached on Saturday, though preparations farther north focused on getting ready for the Republican National Convention.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency to make sure local and state agencies would be ready. The governor said during a media briefing that delegates were being told on how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," Scott said Saturday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Keys, though it was still a sunny day in Tampa. Forecast models show Isaac won't hit Tampa head-on, but the storm will still likely lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up. Protests were to start in full force on Sunday afternoon, and demonstrators have vowed that they will make their presence known rain or shine.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Still, the storm was days away from the Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

When the storm hits, strong winds will be "enough to knock you over" and produce severe thunderstorms, said National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there.

Schools, airports, parks and beaches across South Florida closed ahead of the storm. In the Florida Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm ? even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center.

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Groups including Code Pink, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the AFL-CIO union and Planned Parenthood have already started arriving in Tampa, regardless of the forecast.

Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat.

Flooding and beach erosion is also a concern for southwest Florida. The hurricane warning included the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach southward.

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened Friday night as it swirled toward an expected overnight landfall on Haiti's southern peninsula, threatening the poor nation with punishing rain but unlikely to gain enough steam to strike as a hurricane.

Forecasters said the storm would likely stay below hurricane force until it reached the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and they shifted its projected track back eastward and it remained a possible threat to Tampa, Florida, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday.

Communications in Haiti are often spotty and there were no official reports any damage late Friday.

Government and international aid groups in Haiti's capital were prepared to evacuate several thousand people from settlement camps that sprang up in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. But the main threat appeared aimed at Les Cayes, a city of about 45,000 people on the southwestern coast that is prone to flooding during heavy rain.

Forecasters said Isaac could drop up to eight to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters) of rain on the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haiti is heavily deforested and just a few hours of steady rain can trigger deadly mudslides.

"That kind of rain is going to cause some life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami.

Isaac was centered about 65 miles (100 kilometers) south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, late Friday, and its maximum sustained winds had increased to 70 mph (110 kph). It was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph). Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles (321 kilometers) from the storm's center.

Cuba declared a state of alert Friday for six eastern provinces, according to a Civil Defense announcement read on the afternoon news, and five central provinces were put on preliminary watch. Vacationers in tourist installations of those regions were evacuated.

Radio Baracoa, from the city of Baracoa on the northern coast of eastern Cuba, reported that high seas began topping the city's seawall Friday night. Reports said lower than normal rains had left reservoirs well below capacity and in good shape to absorb runoff.

Cuba has a highly organized civil defense system that goes door-to-door to enforce evacuations of at-risk areas, largely averting casualties from storms even when they cause major flooding and significant damage to crops.

Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe urged people to avoid crossing rivers and to stay calm, saying "panic creates more problems." He said the government had set aside about $50,000 in emergency funds and had buses and 32 boats on standby for evacuations.

About 400,000 people remain in settlement camps comprised of shacks and tarps in the wake of Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake.

In Port-au-Prince, a city of some 3 million ringed by mountains, people went to work as usual Friday, but commercial banks closed at noon and some residents took precautions as the sky darkened, rain fell and the wind picked up.

"Just in case this gets very bad ? the sky is turning gray ? I'm making sure we have enough food in the house," said 25-year-old Joanne Dorville as she carried home rice, sardines, black beans and cooking oil that she had purchased in a street market.

Haitian authorities and aid workers from the International Organization for Migration and the Haitian Red Cross had planned to evacuate as many as 8,000 people from a tent camp at the edge of the capital but few accepted. Two school buses that were supposed to shuttle the people to temporary shelters drove away empty.

"If I leave for a shelter, by the time I come back, everything I have will be gone," said Charles Delizaire, a 39-year-old resident of the settlement named Marassa.

More than a hundred people were at a shelter in a school that President Michel Martelly toured along with Lamothe, the prime minister. Martelly greeted mothers and their children, but after the visit some people began to leave.

"They dragged me from the camp and brought me here," 38-year-old Marlene Charles, thirsty and hungry, said about the aid groups. "There's no way I'm going to spend the night here."

So far, Isaac itself had caused no reported injuries or deaths, but police in Puerto Rico said a 75-year-old woman died near the capital of San Juan on Wednesday when she fell off a balcony while preparing for the storm.

In the Dominican Republic, authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas but, as in Haiti, they encountered resistance. Still, authorities said they evacuated nearly 2,900 people. The majority were transferred to the homes of relatives while about 300 were sent to government shelters.

Flooding was reported in Santo Domingo and Santiago but no reports of injuries.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa said they were working closely with state and federal authorities on monitoring storm as they prepared for the arrival of 70,000 delegates, journalists and protesters, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott said there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, former Tropical Storm Joyce degenerated into a weak low pressure system Friday.
