Automotive Article: Looking at auto insurance quotes for a new car

So you've bought yourself a new car? Congratulations! That's certainly a purchase that matters a lot to most car owners. Whether it's your very first car or just another vehicle to add to your garage, buying a new car is always exciting. Each car certainly feels different on the road and you will always try to find the model that will make you feel comfortable both as a driver and as a passenger. But with a new car comes new responsibility, which always takes the form of insurance. And it's this small bit of responsibility that can sometimes spoil all the fun about buying a new car since it can be really expensive. So let's try to learn how to optimize insurance costs and not spoil the excitement of owning a new vehicle.

One of the things that really matters is the way you financed your car and this is the first thing to look at. The most common option in our country is using auto loans since you can always get good rates and buy a car that you otherwise would have to save a lot of money for. But there's a downside to using auto loans from the insurance perspective since you will be obliged to purchase additional types of coverage with your policy in order to get the loan. Most lending companies require collision and comprehensive coverage to be purchased with the insurance policy and that can considerably increase auto insurance quotes for your car. So make sure to consider this effect when financing your car through a loan. If this is the only way you can get your car the best thing to do is to look at the mistakes most commonly made by people buying a car like this and try to avoid them.

First of all, don't get the policy offer at the dealer's office or by the lending company. They usually have exclusive contracts with specific companies and offer higher rates than you would get from a third party provider. You're obliged to purchase additional coverage but they can't make you buy it from a particular insurer. So when you get your loan take the time to get auto insurance quotes from as many companies as possible in order to get the most competitive offer possible. You will be surprised to see that you can actually find affordable policies even with collision and comprehensive coverage included. That's the whole purpose of comparison shopping.

When using your own money to finance a car you should consider two main options. First, you can get the most stripped down policy carrying only third party liability that will automatically offer cheap auto insurance quotes right from the start. Of course, this means that the situations when your policy will apply will be quite limited. But instead you can save a lot of money on auto insurance. Yet, assuming that you can afford to buy a car without using credits, loans or any other forms of financing it's logic that you actually have enough money to buy decent coverage for your auto as well. And you would certainly like to buy more coverage options in order to protect your car adequately. After all, things like comprehensive coverage or uninsured motorist coverage really come in handy in a range of situations where a basic policy would simply make you pay out of own pocket. You should seriously think about this after you have celebrated you new car purchase.

K-Touch joins China Mobile with Marvell-powered T660, waves a $160 price tag

Last we heard, Chinese manufacturer K-Touch was quite busy showing off its Treasure V8 at this year's Mobile World Congress. Now, the company's taken the wraps off of its budget-friendly, TD-SCDMA T660 smartphone, marking its first intelligent handset on China Mobile. The device itself features a 4-inch, IPS display alongside a 5-megapixel rear shooter and a 1GHz, Marvell PXA920H CPU (the same one found on the ZTE U880E and Lenovo A668T). Specs aside, however, this is K-Touch's first crack at the TD-SCDMA market and it's doing so on the cheap, pricing the Gingerbread-loaded T660 at a mere 1,000 RMB (around $160) without any contracts attached. Not a bad way to kick things off, right?

Rachel Uchitel Speaks on Pregnancy, Second Chances

Rachel Uchitel might be the most famous "other woman" of all time.

At least in modern celebrity gossip times. That much is unquestioned.

She was the first of Tiger Woods' mistresses to be revealed, but before that, was linked to Bones' David Boreanaz. Both rich stars were married with kids at the time, something that isn't lost on the 37-year-old Uchitel.

"Everyone deserves a second chance," she tells Celebrity Baby Scoop.

Pregnant Rachel Uchitel Photo

With her first child due on this week, the reality TV star says it's time to "forgive" and "move on." While the infamous Uchitel admits "my name precedes me," Rachel is trying to heal the past and "have some acceptance with myself."

Rachel is opening up about her "great" pregnancy, excitement about motherhood and hopes for a brighter future with husband Matt Hahn and their baby girl.

"I've moved on and I hope other people will too and see that I am doing my best to try and have a normal life," Rachel Uchitel shares with the site.

Excerpts from her interview below:

On handling intense public scrutiny: "I moved on a long time ago and it's odd to me that a lot of people haven't. People will still hear my name, an article will come out about me, I'll see the negative spin on it and I'm not sure why."

"It was three years ago that my name was in the paper so much. I've actually never commented on anything and did my best to keep my head above water."

"But it's tough when you have people judging you so harshly."

"I've moved on and I hope other people will too and see that I am doing my best to try and have a normal life. You can't make everybody happy and people are going to think what they want to think."

On the real Rachel Uchitel: "It's almost like the crazy person saying, 'I'm not crazy!' [laughs]. People have a preconceived notion about somebody and nothing's going to change that unless you meet that person."

"You can read tabloids about celebrities, and most people have never met these celebrities, and they judge them based on how the story is written."

On Jessica Simpson's baby name choice: "I know that a lot of people were giving Jessica Simpson a hard time about Maxwell which I found interesting because people are so judgemental."

"If you meet somebody somewhere and you ask what name the baby is, you would never say, 'That is so awful,' or 'They're going to call that kid maxi-pad.' You would never say that!"

"It's such a personal choice. It's so awful for poor Jessica who is probably hormonal and going through all these changes to hear people making fun of her child's name."

Kristen Stewart Makes 'After Hours' Debut In 'The Yes/No Show'

'MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman' debuts new clip and cast interview Tuesday night at 7:56 p.m. on MTV and MTV.com.
By Josh Horowitz

At a time when it seems like virtually every movie at the multiplex is based on a fairy tale, comic book or best-selling YA novel, "Snow White & the Huntsman" checks off all the boxes even if it's none of the above as well.

Confusing? Well, the cast is clearly borne of past successful franchises, namely Kristen Stewart (have you heard of her?) coming off of "Twilight" and Chris Hemsworth dropping his Thor hammer in favor of an ax this go-round. And of course the film is inspired by one of the most cherished fairy tales of our youth. But look more closely at "SWATH" (as fans have quickly taken to calling it) and the film clearly owes more to Tolkien than to Walt Disney. And I think that's why we're all excited for its June 1 release. I know that's the case for me. It doesn't hurt that Charlize Theron looks to be chewing some scenery in a fun way with a diabolical take on the evil queen (much more fetching than the one in the cartoon of my youth, as I recall).

Tuesday night (at 7:56 p.m. on MTV & MTV.com to be precise) we're debuting "MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman." As usual, we'll be debuting a never-before-seen clip, and I'll be sitting down with the cast (Stewart, Hemsworth, Theron and Sam Claflin, who portrays the prince in the tale) for a 30-minute interview. We taped the special a little while back, which means I can share something fun and exciting with you: Kristen Stewart's very first participation in "After Hours." And what better franchise to start her off on than "The Yes/No Show"?

There's a lot more where that came from on the full show Tuesday night, including tons of insight into the filming, the actors' takes on their iconic characters, Chris and Kristen's weapons technique and a near-breakup fight between Kristen and me. It's all in good fun, and we're quite proud of it. And there's more exciting "SWATH" news to come as I'm headed out to England later this week to reunite with the entire cast, so as always, feel free to send your questions to me @JoshuaHorowitz with the #MTVSWATH.

A Second Look
I got a chance to see "Avengers" for the second time over the weekend, this time in good old 2-D (and I'd recommend seeing it this way, by the way). And by gosh, I might have enjoyed it more the second time around. I have a bunch of conflicting feelings about the movie. After my first viewing, I was pretty convinced that while I had a great time watching it, it's less satisfying to me than most of the previous films. If we're looking at the recent bevy of Marvel flicks, "Captain America" is my favorite, delivering the most full-bodied experience (i.e., it's got the cool stunts and humor but it's also got a great character arc at its core). But a funny thing happened as "Avengers" rolled the second time around: I let go of my hang-ups with the story (er, there isn't much of one) and I let myself fully geek out for two hours at what Joss Whedon and company expertly did: create the purest fanboy-friendly film ever made.

Check out everything we've got on "Snow White & the Huntsman."

Nvidia GeForce GTX 690

AMD and Nvidia are notorious for routinely trading off the trophy for the best video card on the planet. But judging from Nvidia's latest release, the GeForce GTX 690, we can't help but wonder if the company may hold onto it for slightly longer than usual this time. This isn't just because of its speed, which is considerable, but also because of how well it holds up against two GeForce GTX 680 cards united in Scalable Link Interface (SLI) mode, and because of its power usage?which may just be its most attractive feature. Alas, there's always a "but," and the GTX 690's is its price: a whopping $999 (list), upping the bar that other dual-GPU cards have set around $700-$800. But if you crave the speediest and most power-efficient card you can get, don't let price stand in your way of this one.

Given that it's based on two GK104 GPUs (the same used in the GTX 680), there's not a lot to say about the GTX 690 from a chip-level standpoint that we haven't already said; there's mainly just a lot of multiplying by two to be done. Eight Graphics Processing Clusters (GPCs) mean 16 advanced Streaming Multiprocessor (SMX) units, 3,072 CUDA parallel processing cores, 256 texture units, and 64 ROP units. There's a total of 4GB of GDDR5 video memory, running at 6.008GHz over two 256-bit memory interfaces.

But the clock speeds are the same: 915MHz at the default level, but capable of accelerating to 1,019MHz on average when GPU Boost, Nvidia's new system for dynamic overclocking when the headroom exists for it, activates. And like a single GTX 680, there are four display outputs (three dual-link DVI and one Mini DisplayPort) that let you connect up to the four monitors to the card at once. The card has a TDP of 300 watts, and Nvidia recommends a power supply of no less than 650 watts if you want to install the GTX 690.

Where the GTX 690 differs from the GTX 680 is in its design. Whereas dual-GPU cards traditionally just extend the design elements of the series they lead, the GTX 690 abandons the GTX 680's (tried-and-true) black plastic style in favor of an entirely new and fresh approach. Nvidia claims that these innovations have practical applications, and in case of the cast aluminum frame with trivalent chromium plating, fan housing made from an injection-molded magnesium alloy, dual?vapor chamber cooling system (with dual-slot heat sink and an aluminum base plate) that expels heat via a center-mounted axial fan, and ten-phase power supply with a ten-layer two-ounce copper PCB that's undoubtedly true. But the polycarbonate windows on the card's front and the GeForce logo on the side that glows when the system is powered on suggest that Nvidia was just as concerned with delivering a prestige object to those willing to shell out a cool grand to be able to better play games. (And, if you ask us, that's actually not a terrible reason in this case.)

In any event, the usual caveats with big video cards apply. The GTX 690 blocks a second expansion slot, requires two PCIe power connectors (both eight-pin, a diversion from the two six-pin plugs used on the GTX 680, though understandable given the card's beefy stature), and may be too long to fit into smaller cases. (But like its immediate predecessor it's shorter than we're used to, so you'll have a better chance of it working in your system.)

Performance
Performance on the GTX 690 is, of course, excellent?which makes sense for a fusion of two units of the fastest single-GPU card out there. It dominated AMD's last-generation dual-GPU behemoth, the Radeon HD 6990 , in practically every gaming test we threw at it, which is to be expected. Sample scores: 59.8 frames per second (fps) versus 53.6fps in Aliens vs. Predator, 74fps versus 57fps in Batman: Arkham City, and 84fps versus 45.9fps in Lost Planet 2?in each case running at 2,560-by-1,600 resolution, with maximum details enabled. The one test where the GTX 690 didn't triumph? Total War: Shogun 2, where the 6990 came out ahead with 27fps versus the GTX 690's 23.3fps?but more on this in the next paragraph.

It's worth noting, however, that the GTX 690 is rarely faster than two SLI-connected GTX 680s. It keeps up incredibly nicely with the pair of cards; it just doesn't surpass them in terms of speed in most cases. Granted, because the frame rates we're talking about here are so high, this isn't a big deal?can you tell the difference, for example, between Batman: Arkham City running at 76fps and 74fps, and Lost Planet 2 running at 86.4fps and 84fps??but those who've already splurged on two GTX 680s can still feel satisfied with their purchase. (One note about performance here: There was functionally no discernible difference between the two GTX 680s and the single GTX 690 running Total War: Shogun 2. We asked Nvidia about this, and were told that a recent patch to the game has hindered multi-GPU performance somewhat?this also likely explains at least some of why the 6990 looked faster on the same game. We can't guarantee that you'll be hampered by this problem, or that a future patch won't fix it, but it's something to keep an eye on for now if you play that game.)

As was the case with the GTX 680, the defining characteristic of the GTX 690 is its power efficiency. Our full Intel X79 Express?based test system drew (as measured by way of an Extech Datalogger) 110 watts when idle, and 413.7 watts under the full load of a maxed-out Metro 2033 benchmark run. That's impressive as it is, but it looks even better compared with the GTX 680 SLI setup, which drew 116.7 while idling and 469.6 watts under load: Maybe the two cards have the tiniest of performance edges, but the power savings will unquestionably prove much more significant over the long run. An interesting side note: The GTX 690 also drew less power than either the 6990 (125 watts while idling, 424.9 watts under load) or two Radeon HD 7950 ?cards in a CrossFireX configuration (110 watts while idle, 415.3 watts under load).

Nvidia has done a remarkable job with the GeForce GTX 690, turning out a card that's worth bragging about?and bestowing our Editors' Choice award upon?for reasons that go well beyond merely its speed. We have no doubt that AMD is working on its own dual-GPU card at this very moment (we'll even venture a guess at its name: the Radeon HD 7990?), but unless the company effects a substantial revamp of its current generation's architecture, that card is going to have a hard time competing with Nvidia's. In performance, power usage, and appearance alike, it's not just the card to beat?it's the card to cherish.

'Avengers' Fans Rave About 'Unbelievable' Film At Midnight Screening

'My mind was just blown,' one moviegoer tells MTV News in Times Square.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

The long-awaited "Avengers" finally assembled Thursday night at theaters throughout North America with one of the biggest midnight openings since "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." We were on the scene in New York's Times Square, where fans dressed as Loki and the Hulk donned their RealD "Avengers" collector glasses and couldn't stop raving about Earth's mightiest heroes.

"I was really worried that it was gonna be just subpar, if not even at all good. But then I saw it. I just had to sit there for a minute and just take it in. It was amazing!" said Akil Vichus Davis, who was skeptical that director Joss Whedon could take on such a hefty project. But he was pleasantly surprised and said he's very happy with the outcome. "It was solid. It was good. The stories were good. They had great moments. The cinematography, the directing, it was off the chain. It was good."

Marvel fan Justin Silver agreed, saying, "My mind was just blown. I was just like, 'Oh my God!' It was crazy. It was unbelievable!"

The ensemble cast includes Marvel newcomer Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and many actors reprising their roles, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans, who plays Captain America. Anand Kodamanchili was thrilled with how much the legendary First Avenger was featured in the film. "I'm a huge fan of Captain America, and just watching him kick some serious ass again, again and again was pretty awesome," he gushed.

With its earlier overseas release, "The Avengers" has raked in more than $300 million internationally so far, according to Deadline Hollywood. When box-office expert Jeff Bock said, "This isn't just a movie, it's an event," he wasn't kidding. AMC Theaters held the daylong "Ultimate Marvel Marathon," screening "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor" and "Captain America" back-to-back leading up to the "Avengers" midnight release. The screenings sold out in numerous major theaters in North America more than a month ago.

Deadline also reports that the film grossed a total of $281.1 million through its first eight days overseas and is slated to hit over $160 million in the U.S. through Sunday. With a rise in ticket prices, especially 3-D and IMAX, there's a strong chance it could top the current record, held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," of $169.2 million. If you include the opening weekend in Russia and China, the film could potentially make close to $585 million worldwide through Sunday. A studio mogul told Deadline, "It's tracking off the charts. Biggest in every category and with everyone — men, women, young, old. Any way you slice and dice it. It's just a mega-movie."

So what's the secret? We certainly noticed a mix of men and women at the premiere release last night. Moviegoer Kelly Burbrink enjoyed the comedic parts of the film. "[I] absolutely loved the one-liners of the humor," she said. "They were fantastic and I'm sure we missed a bunch because everyone was just dying laughing after them that you couldn't hear what came right after. They were just hysterical."

There's something in it for everyone. Action, comedy, an insanely attractive cast — and when you mix that with the directing talents of Joss Whedon, it's no wonder fan Nicole DeBonis screams, "Oh my gosh! No words can describe it."

Daniel Vives agrees and highly recommends the film for all audiences, saying, "Joss Whedon did an excellent job with directing and writing the movie. Everyone needs to go see this movie."

"The Avengers" is currently in theaters nationwide.

Pacemaker DJ app for BlackBerry PlayBook impressions (video)

Pacemaker DJ app for BlackBerry PlayBook impressions (video)

Back in 2008, a nifty little box of tricks elbowed its way onto the market -- the Tonium Pacemaker. A gadget about the size of an OG PSP, with a complete DJ set-up hidden inside. It was a brave idea, and one that was fondly received. A few years down the line, mixed with a sprinkling of business politics, and sadly the Pacemaker's time on stage would come to an end. Like all good performances though, the show wasn't completely over. In true musical fashion its back for an encore, reinvented and more importantly -- right now at least -- in our hands. We spent sometime with the reincarnated Pacemaker DJ app, to see what life is like after hardware.

Ireland's Aran Islands: Old maps and dead clams help solve coastal boulder mystery

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? Perched atop the sheer coastal cliffs of Ireland's Aran Islands, ridges of giant boulders have puzzled geologists for years. What forces could have torn these rocks from the cliff edges high above sea level and deposited them far inland?

While some researchers contend that only a tsunami could push these stones, new research in The Journal of Geology finds that plain old ocean waves, with the help of some strong storms, did the job.

And they're still doing it.

The three tiny Aran Islands are just off the western coast of Ireland. The elongated rock ridges form a collar along extended stretches of the islands' Atlantic coasts. The sizes of the boulders in the formations range "from merely impressive to mind-bogglingly stupendous," writes Dr. R?nadh Cox, who led the research with her Williams College students. One block the team studied weighs an estimated 78 tons, yet was still cut free from its position 36 feet above sea level and shoved further inland.

Armed with equations that model the forces generated by waves, some researchers have concluded that no ordinary ocean waves could muster the force necessary to move the largest of the boulders this high above the ocean surface and so far inland. The math suggests the rocks in the ridges could only have been put there by a tsunami.

The equations tell one story. The islands' residents tell another. According to some locals, enormous rocks have moved in their lifetimes, despite the fact that there hasn't been a tsunami to hit the islands since 1755.

"Unless you have little green men from mars doing this on the quiet, it must be storm waves," Cox said.

While the anecdotes from residents are interesting, Cox and her team went in search of more concrete evidence. The clincher came when the team compared modern high-altitude photos of the coastline to set of meticulous maps surveyed in 1839. The 19th century surveyors, who Cox describes as "possibly the most anal men on the planet," carefully mapped not only the boulder ridges, but all of the criss-crossing stone walls that farmers built between fields. The researchers digitized the maps and overlaid them on the modern images, using the walls to line the two up accurately.

"Not only did they map every wall, they did it right. The maps aren't even off by even a meter."

The overlay of the new photos with the old maps shows definitively that sections of the ridges have moved substantially since 1839 -- nearly 100 years after the most recent tsunami. Some sections moved inland at an average rate of nearly 10 feet per decade. In some places, the ridge had run over and demolished field walls noted on the old maps.

Other lines of evidence corroborate residents' accounts of recent movement. When the boulders were ripped from the bedrock, tiny clams that live in cracks and crevices sometimes came along for the ride. Using radiocarbon dating, Cox and her team found that some of the rocks have been pulled from the coastline within the last 60 years. What's more, the researchers have been photographing sections of the ridge during each field season since 2006, and they've documented movement from year to year.

So what of the equations that point to tsunami as the only possible earth mover?

"We've eliminated tsunami and I think we can rule out little green men," Cox said. "What that says is our equations aren't good enough."

Cox thinks the characteristics of the Aran Island shoreline are throwing off the calculations. The Aran cliffs rise nearly vertically out of the Atlantic, leaving very deep water close to the shore. As waves slam into the sheer cliff, that water is abruptly deflected back out toward the oncoming waves. This backflow may amplify subsequent waves. The result is an occasional storm wave that is much larger than one would expect.

"In this kind of environment these would be less rare," Cox said. "You only need a couple of them to move these rocks around. The radiocarbon data show that not only are some boulders moving in recent years, but also that some of them have been in the ridges for hundreds and even a couple of thousand years. Accumulated activity of rare large-wave events over that time could certainly build these structures"

Cox plans to add a physicist to her research team in the near future to try to shed some light on the wave dynamics on the islands, but it's clear from the evidence the team has already gathered that storm waves can do more than some researchers thought.

Following the devastating Indonesian tsunami in 2004, there has been renewed interest in learning about how a tsunami can change the landscape. Cox's findings have important implications for that research.

"There's a tendency to attribute the movement of large objects to tsunami," she said. "We're saying hold the phone. Big boulders are getting moved by storm waves."
