Boston bomb photos shed light on end of manhunt

BOSTON (AP) ? After a week of chaos, the suspect in the deadly Boston Marathon bombings emerged from his hiding spot bloodied and seemingly exhausted ? the red dot of a sniper's rifle lighting his forehead. Photos of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev released by a state police officer give a long-awaited glimpse into the end of an episode that kept the city and its suburbs on edge.

The images, the first of Tsarnaev from that night in April, were released to Boston Magazine on Thursday by a state police photographer angry about a Rolling Stone cover shot of Tsarnaev and hoping to counter what he said was the music magazine's glamorization of the terror suspect.

The release was unauthorized, and Sgt. Sean Murphy faces an internal investigation and possible suspension.

Murphy's 14 photos show the 19-year-old Tsarnaev emerging from his hiding spot in a drydocked boat in Watertown, just west of Boston, his right hand up in surrender in one, his head buried in his arms in another. In every picture of Tsarnaev, the red dot of a sniper's rifle sight is trained on his head.

To Watertown resident Anna Lanzo, the photos show a teen, as weary as he appears, still capable of standing, running and doing the damage she worried he'd do when she was trapped in her house three months ago while her neighborhood was on lockdown.

"I was petrified," said Lanzo, 70, who recalled police swarming her yard, searching under her car and motioning her to get back whenever she approached her windows while they searched for Tsarnaev.

Watertown town Councilor Cecilia Lenk saw nothing she didn't expect in the pictures of Tsarnaev, but it doesn't mean the photos had no effect. Starting with the Rolling Stone cover, the pictures have revived memories of a terrifying time for Watertown residents, she said.

"It's kind of like you're not able to get away from it," Lenk said.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to numerous charges related to the April 15 bombing, which killed 3 and injured more than 260 others near the marathon's finish line.

He was captured April 19 after escaping during a shootout with police in Watertown the night before, running over his older brother and fellow suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in the process. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died following the shootout.

Watertown was in lockdown the next day as thousands of law enforcement officers, in helmets and Humvees, descended for a door-to-door search for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. He was captured, and caught on film by Murphy, after the lockdown was lifted and a homeowner noticed streaks of blood on his boat.

The Rolling Stone cover story on Tsarnaev was released online this week, a few days after his public court appearance. Critics blasted the magazine, saying the cover shot of Tsarnaev was reminiscent of the magazine's flattering portrayals or rock legends such as Jim Morrison. Rolling Stone says the story was part of its commitment to "serious and thoughtful coverage" of important political and cultural issues.

Murphy, in his statement to Boston Magazine, said his photos show "the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine."

Murphy has not returned calls from The Associated Press. No one answered the door Friday at the blue cottage along the coast in Biddeford, Maine, where neighbors said he spends weekends.

Christina DiIorio-Sterling, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, who is prosecuting the marathon bombing case, called Murphy's release of the photos "completely unacceptable."

Defense attorney Peter Elikann, who's not involved in the case, said that Tsarnaev's attorney could try to use Murphy's statement to try to show the investigation was biased against her client.

"If he expressed that he released those because of anger or because of hatred, that's never good to do in a criminal investigation," Elikann said.

Lanzo said she's glad Murphy released the photos, especially after the Rolling Stone cover, even though it brought back unsettling memories.

"You're almost making him look like this kid that, you know, doesn't look too bad," she said. "And then when you know the whole story and you see these pictures, I think it sheds a different light on it."

Florida Aquarium builds on ?flag in the ground?

A $5.9 million New Market Tax Credit transaction for the Florida Aquarium closed on June 28.

This included $3.7 million in existing aquarium funding and a $1.6 million investment from U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB), as well as funding from the Urban Development Fund, an affiliate of Chicago-based Aries Capital.

The amount is in an escrow account in the aquarium?s name, and the fund will last seven years.

The aquarium will request funds as needed for projects related to its Rising Tides Campaign, including a new education center, said Chief Financial Officer Kim Casey.

The aquarium will net a $1 million benefit from the $5.9 million, she said.

Congress established the New Markets Tax Credit Program in 2000 to encourage investment of private capital in low-income communities.

As the Tampa Bay Business Journal reported on July 1, the aquarium qualified for funding based on 2000 U.S. Census data.

Channelside once was, but no longer is considered a low-income community, Casey said.

?When the aquarium was built in 1995, we were here to drive economic development,? she said. ?That?s why we put the flag in the ground to begin with.?

Dallas Cowboys Josh Brent retiring from football

by MARJORIE OWENS & TED MADDEN

WFAA

Updated today at 6:29 PM

DALLAS - The Dallas Cowboys announced Thursday afternoon that Josh Brent will retire from football.

"Over the last few weeks, there has been plenty of debate on whether the Cowboys would remove Josh Brent from the roster or the NFL would perhaps suspend the defensive tackle," read a statement from the Dallas Cowboys. "On Thursday, Brent removed himself."

The Cowboys said he'll be placed on the reserved/retired list.

In late December, Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of his teammate and friend Jerry Brown Jr.

"I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order," Brent said in the statement. "Those priorities are more important than football."

When asked about Brent's retirement Thursday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the move was something the player needed to do as he faces trial.

"I think in my mind it speaks for itself," he said. "He basically wants to concentrate on what he needs to concentrate on and this allows him to do that."

Jones said he wouldn't speculate on whether Brent would return to the NFL.

"He certainly has the ability to play," he said.

He also addressed whether Brent's retirement would ease the Cowboys movement forward.

"I don;t quite think about it that way," he said. "From the very beginning, we did everything we could to show that we think a lot of him, and we do as a team and Cowboys family. This was a tragedy; we didn't want to do anything in any way that would inpact opinions relative to how it's adjudicated, so it can be sorted out off the football field"

The former defensive tackle was released from the Dallas County Jail earlier this month after he was booked in late June. Prosecutors said he tested positive for marijuana and failed two drug tests, including one in May and June. Upon his release, a judge ordered Brent to wear a drug-detecting patch and was forbidden to drive.?A hearing on the failed tests is scheduled for Friday.

Brent was signed as a rookie with the Cowboys in 2010 and played 39 games.

Friday, the Cowboys will head to Oxnard, Calif. to start training camp. Brent's trial date is scheduled for Sept. 23.

AP: Study finds fracking chemicals didn't spread

(AP) ? A landmark federal study on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, shows no evidence that chemicals from the natural gas drilling process moved up to contaminate drinking water aquifers at a western Pennsylvania drilling site, the Department of Energy told The Associated Press.

After a year of monitoring, the researchers found that the chemical-laced fluids used to free gas trapped deep below the surface stayed thousands of feet below the shallower areas that supply drinking water, geologist Richard Hammack said.

Although the results are preliminary ? the study is still ongoing ? they are a boost to a natural gas industry that has fought complaints from environmental groups and property owners who call fracking dangerous.

Drilling fluids tagged with unique markers were injected more than 8,000 feet below the surface, but were not detected in a monitoring zone 3,000 feet higher. That means the potentially dangerous substances stayed about a mile away from drinking water supplies.

"This is good news," said Duke University scientist Rob Jackson, who was not involved with the study. He called it a "useful and important approach" to monitoring fracking, but cautioned that the single study doesn't prove that fracking can't pollute, since geology and industry practices vary widely in Pennsylvania and across the nation.

The boom in gas drilling has led to tens of thousands of new wells being drilled in recent years, many in the Marcellus Shale formation that lies under parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. That's led to major economic benefits but also fears that the chemicals used in the drilling process could spread to water supplies.

The mix of chemicals varies by company and region, and while some are openly listed the industry has complained that disclosing special formulas could violate trade secrets. Some of the chemicals are toxic and could cause health problems in significant doses, so the lack of full transparency has worried landowners and public health experts.

The study done by the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Pittsburgh marked the first time that a drilling company let government scientists inject special tracers into the fracking fluid and then continue regular monitoring to see whether it spread toward drinking water sources. The research is being done at a drilling site in Greene County, which is southwest of Pittsburgh and adjacent to West Virginia.

Eight new Marcellus Shale horizontal wells were monitored seismically and one was injected with four different man-made tracers at different stages of the fracking process, which involves setting off small explosions to break the rock apart. The scientists also monitored a separate series of older gas wells that are about 3,000 feet above the Marcellus to see if the fracking fluid reached up to them.

The industry and many state and federal regulators have long contended that fracking itself won't contaminate surface drinking water because of the extreme depth of the gas wells. Most are more than a mile underground, while drinking water aquifers are usually within 500 to 1000 feet of the surface.

Kathryn Klaber, the CEO of the industry-led Marcellus Shale Coalition, called the study "great news."

"It's important that we continue to seek partnerships that can study these issues, and inform the public of the findings," Klaber said.

While the lack of contamination is encouraging, Jackson said he wondered whether the unidentified drilling company might have consciously or unconsciously taken extra care with the research site, since it was being watched. He also noted that other aspects of the drilling process can cause pollution, such as poor well construction, surface spills of chemicals, and wastewater.

Jackson and his colleagues at Duke have done numerous studies over the last few years that looked at whether gas drilling is contaminating nearby drinking water, with mixed results. None of them have found chemical contamination but they did find evidence that natural gas escaped from some wells near the surface and polluted drinking water in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Scott Anderson, a drilling expert with the Environment Defense Fund, said the results sound very interesting.

"Very few people think that fracking at significant depths routinely leads to water contamination. But the jury is still out on what the odds are that this might happen in special situations," Anderson said.

One finding surprised the researchers: Seismic monitoring determined one hydraulic fracture traveled 1,800 feet out from the well bore; most traveled just a few hundred feet. That's significant because some environmental groups have questioned whether the fractures could go all the way to the surface.

The researchers believe that fracture may have hit naturally occurring faults, and that's something both industry and regulators don't want.

"We would like to be able to predict those areas" with natural faults and avoid them, Hammack said.

Jackson said the 1,800-foot fracture was very interesting, but also noted it is still a mile from the surface.

The DOE team will start to publish full results of the tests over the next few months, said Hammack, who called the large amount of field data from the study "the real deal."

"People probably will be looking at the data for years to come," he said.

If you possess a company, you need to continue to consider promotion. If folks do not really hear about your business and products, you won't be very successful. When you need to win new customers and keep current ones, video advertising can help drive sales and create impressive results. Read this post for info on video promotion.

Ask your visitors to make their own videos. You can for instance organize a contest and ask customers to film themselves while they use your products. Reward the best videos with an interesting award and use the submitted videos as promotional material for your social media marketing effort and for the website.

If you choose to engage a video marketing professional to create a video for your business, check out their portfolio first. You must employ a professional who can produce some quality videos, address a specific market and persuade customers to purchase a product. Don't waste your money and time on the professional who doesn't have a good portfolio.

Try using others in your videos. This may give people the notion that you are not full of hot air. Even though it might be a little hard to convince somebody that the individuals in your video are really fans of you and your products, it comes across better than constantly doing videos only.

Do your best to create a video that conveys a professional image. This means you should avoid utilizing the effects available on programs like Windows Movie Maker and other basic applications. Maintain your editing simple by simply cutting or dissolving to a black screen instead of using standardized editing effects.

The information of the video is king. When it is not fun to watch and providing excellent advice, why would anyone watch it? You have to sit back and dedicate the majority of the time to coming up with content which people really want to find and view so that your video becomes popular.

People love competition, which explains why holding a video contest is such a superb marketing method. Ask viewers to generate their own videos and then have everyone vote on them. This will help drive viewers to your site and energize them giving them a chance to win something.

Explore Google Search Stories. This tool enables one to show your audience different things on Google such as results for a particular search query, graphics and maps. This may be a great way to record your on-line presence, show your audience your featured blog posts or create a guide to assist clients as they order your products.

The initial thing you have to do is only get your own videos out there. Start making some and see what gets people's eyes. You must uncover what topic you know the most about and figure out a solution to make it fascinating. People need to be entertained.

When using videos to market your company, make sure to include a link to your site. If someone views your video and is interested in your business, more information will soon be just one click away. These hyperlinks can be added either in the video description, or in a hovering caption added to your video. However, you do it, be sure the link is easily visible and always kept up to date.

If you're new to video promotion, don't worry too much about the equipment you happen to be using. You don't need a professional television or movie camera to do video advertising. A simple camera will operate just fine, so long as it could deliver great quality digital videos. A web cam is never a great idea for video advertising.

Among the finest pieces of guidance about video advertising is to keep it real. Make a script, rehearse this, and then shoot your video. That's all there is to it. You'll end up looking over produced and imitation if you need to do more than that. Real is trustworthy and dependable.

Watch the numbers available for the video, whether it be your server stats or on Youtube.com. This will help you compare each video you make so it is possible to tell which are successful and which ought to have been left on the cutting room floor. This is actually the only way to keep building your campaigns skyward.

Use videos for marketing your sites or social networking. A YouTube user could be directed to Facebook, by way of example. Promote you websites wherever your videos are hosted so people can find you. If you link your social media marketing to your videos, traffic will improve to both.

Try cutting your longer videos into smaller sections. Many video marketers don't consider the crowd's attention span, so they make videos that are too long. Most of the people don't view a 10-minute video about just one product. Try breaking a very long video like that into multiple pieces which can be released once each day.

It's difficult to hold people's focus for a lengthy period of time. Three minutes is a perfect cap length for maintaining viewer interest and ensuring the coverage of the appropriate advice. You can go for as long as 5 minutes, but anything over that is truly overkill. A terrific motto to follow would be to keep things short and sweet.

To show viewers that you're serious about your video marketing campaign make videos frequently to share with others. These videos might be informational or conversational. Your viewers will appreciate knowing that they can be determined by your for producing videos in a timely manner. Attempt to produce at least a weekly video for your audience.

Do not fret about perfection. You don't need high quality equipment for video promotion. The tools on your computer should be more than adequate for the job. In Addition, smart phones have built-in cameras, so if you own this kind of telephone, you can use its camera for your videos. During your videos remain professional and provide related content that your customers might want to see.

Because you're now knowledgeable on how to utilise video marketing, make use of the hints. Video is a different and extremely popular way to promote a business, so learn as much as possible about this. When you do, you'll find great success.

Eric Pang ousts Andrew D?Souza in first round clash at Canada Open 2013 ? Badminton news

Netherlands? experienced badminton player, Eric Pang, started his campaign with a positive note as he easily overpowered Andrew D?Souza, a local player, in Men?s Singles first round of Yonex Canada Open 2013 in Richmond, on Wednesday, July 17.

The incredible Pang, who is the second seeded shuttler in Men?s Singles category, played flawless badminton and easily stamped his supremacy on court by crushing Andrew in just 25 minutes.

The higher ranked, Pang, was in complete command on court as he did not let his opponent to dictate the terms. He controlled the pressure well and easily won the match in straight sets with a superb 21-14 and 21-14 total on the board.

On the contrary, Andrew failed to make his home crowd happy as he could not cope up with the impressive speed of his rival and eventually crashed out without clinching any set in this first round clash.

In the first game, Andrew showed aggression in the starting rallies but he failed to cope up with the speed of his opponent who started to play attacking badminton.

Pang was comfortable in dictating the pace of rallies and he did not face any trouble in grabbing an early lead in the first set.

The Dutch was quick in his court coverage and his powerful and perfectly angled smashes earned him a comfortable lead until the one-minute break.

After the interval, Andrew tried to get close on the board by increasing his speed but he could not break the flow of his challenger and remained struggling.

Meanwhile, Pang continued playing with variations in his shots and he remained successful in winning the opening game in a dominating fashion with a huge 21-14 score on the board.

In the second game, Andrew showed a little improvement in the opening rallies when he played well at net but again lost his control enabling his rival to set up a reasonable lead until the break.

In the second part, Pang sailed smoothly by playing attacking and positive badminton. He dominated the game in all areas of the court and eventually grabbed the second set with a controlled margin of 21-14.

93% The Hunt

All Critics (72) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (67) | Rotten (5)

[A] harrowing but flawed study of an innocent man accused of pedophilia.

It leaves us not only with an unforgettable final image, but also the troubling thought that witch hunts, like war, will always be with us - all the more so in the modern era of instant communication.

It is a devastating film to watch, a heedful one, and a tragic reminder that no matter how well a life has been conducted, the mere whiff of such scandalous behavior is condemnation enough.

[A] quietly devastating drama about a soft-spoken, bespectacled and devoted kindergarten teacher whose life is upended by a false accusation from one of his students.

This is filmmaking of a high order, even though the production's scale is modest and the climax is not without its facile contrivances.

Unsettling, forthright and thought-provoking, The Hunt is also brilliantly titled.

Mads Mikkelsen displays remarkable range as a subdued kindergarten teacher confronting sex-abuse charges in a small Danish town.

Mikkelsen and a terrific ensemble navigate complex emotions and moral quandaries in a terrain where a satisfying resolution is as hard to come by as a child who never tells a lie.

...incredible acting by Mikkelsson, (but) what is unforgettable is the acting of the young girl who makes the allegation, Annika Wedderkopp. It's remarkable that someone so young could give such a performance.

The characters... are not symbolic. They're real people, leading imperfect lives... but we can relate to their feelings, and their actions at every turn of this searing drama.

Vinterberg's best filmmaking since his Dogme '95 entry "The Celebration."

Mikkelsen, one of his country's finest actors, in collaboration with Thomas Vinterberg, one of its finest directors, delivers what may be his strongest performance yet.

A nuanced portrait of a fundamentally decent man grappling with a world that has decided to treat him indecently.

The innocent man wrongly accused is something that everyone can identify with - what if it happened to me?

Mikkelsen's an actor of restraint, and ...Vinterberg's modern day witch hunt tale gives the actor a whole range of restraint to work with in a film whose title begins literally, turns figurative, then, in a chilling coda, suggests a merging of the two.

The Hunt works as simplistic, cathartic melodrama. It's about ambiguity, but there's nothing ambiguous about the film itself.

The Hunt is beautifully shot and performed. But gritty, immersive Dogme it is not.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Some Detroit residents voiced skepticism on Thursday that the former U.S. manufacturing powerhouse would emerge in better shape from its historic bankruptcy filing designed to fix the city's financial crisis.

Hours after learning Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, residents spoke of the stark realities that come with living in a financially broken city.

"It was like putting a thumb in a dam," said Jodie Holmes, 55, as he leaned against an abandoned restaurant marked with graffiti, waiting for a bus to take him to his temporary job.

"I don't know if bankruptcy will help us or drop us to our knees," he added.

Detroit filed Chapter 9 bankruptcy in federal court on Thursday. The bankruptcy, if approved by a federal judge, would force Detroit's thousands of creditors into negotiations with the city's emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, to resolve an estimated $18.5 billion in debt that has crippled Michigan's largest city.

Detroit was once synonymous with U.S. manufacturing prowess. Its automotive giants switched production to planes, tanks and munitions during World War Two, earning the city the nickname of the "Arsenal of Democracy."

Now a third of Detroit's 700,000 residents live in poverty and about a fifth are unemployed.

"Maybe bankruptcy will help. I don't know," said lifelong Detroiter Damien Collins, 68, outside his east-side house surrounded by abandoned homes.

The retired autoworker said he had given up hope anything would bring back Detroit.

"Nothing else has worked, so why not try it?" he asked.

Detroit's economic struggles have resulted in a deterioration of city life. The murder rate is the highest in nearly 40 years, only a third of its ambulances were in service in the first quarter of 2013 and nearly 78,000 abandoned buildings create "additional public safety problems," Michigan's Republican governor, Rick Snyder, wrote in a letter accompanying the filing.

Residents have also had to cope with a breakdown of services. Forty percent of street lights were non-functional in the first three months of this year, while the police took an average of 58 minutes to respond to emergency calls, more than five times the national average. The city government has also been plagued by mismanagement and political corruption.

"Detroit has a lot to offer, but we need a clean sweep of politicians," said Joanna Maslach, 30, a restaurant manager. "There's still too much corruption here. It's too dysfunctional."

Jim Fields, 37, who recently moved to a downtown loft from the suburbs, is one who believes the city is poised for a comeback. He is among a growing number of professionals moving to historic buildings converted into loft spaces.

"Bankruptcy hits the reset button," the software engineer said. "It's a golden opportunity to make this city right again. I'm very hopeful."

Nokia misses estimates; sales to China halve

Finnish mobile maker Nokia shipped fewer phones than forecast in the second quarter, despite a 32 percent rise in sales of its flagship Lumia smartphone.

Shares traded down 2.65 percent after the news, as mobile phone sales disappointed, falling by 4 percent to 53.7 million units, below market expectations of 56.2 million. Shipments of Lumia smartphones rose to 7.4 million quarter-on-quarter, but missed estimates of 8.1 million.

Nokia?s net sales came in at 5.7 billion euros ($7.5 billion) in the second-quarter, below the 6.4 billion euros expected in a Reuters poll.

However, analysts said that the rise in Lumia shipments marked a breakthrough for Nokia, after a significant marketing push by the firm.

?Fantastic, well done Nokia,? Dan Wagner, CEO and founder at mPowa Technologies told CNBC on Thursday. ?This really says that their smartphone initiative is starting to pay off.?

Ian Fogg, head of mobile at research firm IHS Global Insight, said that although Nokia was clearly still struggling, its Lumia shipments were one of several bright spots in its results.

On the downside, Nokia?s net sales to Greater China showed a sharp drop of 57 percent from last year, a greater drop than for any other markets. Fogg attributed this to ?collateral damage? from Nokia?s decision to pair with Microsoft?s Windows operating system, which is integrated with three social media sites ? Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter ? that are unavailable in China.

(Read More: China slowdown weighs on tech giant SAP)

Nokia?s latest results could heap more pressure upon Chief Executive Stephen Elop who unveiled a five-year plan in 2011 to turn the company around. Now in its third year, the plan ? which involved changes in manufacturing, research and development ? has yet to bear fruit with figures continuing to show weakness.

Nokia?s strategic partnership with Microsoft remains in place, with additional models of its Lumia smartphone series announced in the last year. Earlier in July, Nokia introduced the Lumia 1020, a smartphone with a 41-megapixel camera, which uses Microsoft?s Windows operating system once more. It?s due out in the U.S. market on July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year contract, and is due to be available later in other markets, including China.

(AP) ? The Emmy Awards are television's biggest celebration of itself, but this year's ceremony will face an intruder: "House of Cards," the first online series to nab a top nomination with its best drama series.

Netflix's triumph on Thursday, which includes nods for its revival of "Arrested Development," is putting a further squeeze on the broadcast networks that already have lost substantial Emmy ground to cable. New network offerings were almost completely shut out and, like last year, no network drama made the nominations cut.

Kevin Spacey, the nominated star of the political drama "House of Cards," reveled in its impressive nine bids and role as a groundbreaker.

It's "really, in many ways, kind of a new paradigm," he said. "It's just a great, great thing for all of us."

The major networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, likely have a different viewpoint. Cable channels over the year have sharply eroded their share of the audience, and now the Internet is nibbling away and will only become more robust as viewers turn increasingly to computers and other devices to consume video.

A 6-year-old TV academy rules change allows online entries to compete with cable and broadcast programs, but until Thursday online shows popped up only in lower-profile categories.

"It's really groundbreaking," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "It's beyond our most bold expectations. We were thinking a single nomination would be a win... It's as much a win for Internet television as it is for the content creators."

Networks still field the most-watched series ? such as top-rated series "NCIS" and the 20 million-plus viewers it delivers weekly to CBS ? and enjoy the rich opportunities they represent.

"There's nothing more profitable than having a big broadcast television hit that can be exploited on multiple platforms," including syndication and online, said Garth Ancier, a former executive for both broadcast networks and cable.

But when the Emmys are presented this fall on CBS, it will surely be irritating to serve as a promotional vehicle for the competition. The ceremony rotates among the big four broadcasters who, with the exception of basically flat NBC, saw their number of Emmy bids decline this year.

Besides the showing by Netflix, the leading number of nominations went to a cable miniseries, FX's "American Horror Story: Asylum." HBO fielded the next top nominees: "Game of Thrones" with 16 nods and the Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" earned 15 nominations.

NBC's "Saturday Night Live" came in with 15 as well, but it, outgoing "30 Rock" (also NBC, 13 bids) and "Modern Family" (ABC, 12 nominations) had the only impressive tallies for broadcast.

The bonanza of nominations for "Game of Thrones" is the swords-and-fantasy show's most-ever and includes a best drama series nod and three acting bids, including one for Peter Dinklage.

Recognition went to a number of other primarily big-screen actors who have migrated to TV for powerhouse projects, with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon for "Under the Candelabra" among them.

Joining "House of Cards" and "Game of Thrones" in the best drama series category are "Breaking Bad," ''Downton Abbey," ''Mad Men" and last year's winner, "Homeland."

"Mad Men," which last year missed out on the best drama trophy that would have been its record-setting fifth, eclipsing fellow four-time winners "Hill Street Blues," ''L.A. Law" and "The West Wing," gets another shot this year.

"Mad Men" and its creator failed to receive any writing nominations for the first time in the series' six-year history.

Besides "American Horror Story: Asylum," others nominated in the miniseries or movie category are "Behind the Candelabra," ''Phil Spector," ''Political Animals," ''Top of the Lake" and "The Bible," which was a hit for the History channel and is getting a sequel on NBC.

Hot British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who gained fame in "Sherlock" and played the villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness," is nominated as best lead actor in the movie and miniseries category for "Parade's End."

In the comedy series category, nominees are "The Big Bang Theory," ''Girls," ''Louie," ''Modern Family," ''Veep" and "30 Rock," recognized for its final season. Another outgoing comedy, "The Office," didn't receive a best series nod.

Joining Spacey in the contest for best drama series actor are Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"; Jon Hamm, "Mad Men"; Jeff Daniels, "The Newsroom"; and Damian Lewis, "Homeland," last year's winner.

Kevin Bacon, one of the big-screen stars trying their hand at TV, was not recognized in the category for "The Following."

"Breaking Bad," now in its final episodes on AMC, goes out with a best drama Emmy nomination.

"What's so great about this thing is it's going to bring us all back together. A little family reunion. So we get to come back together and celebrate the time we had together and the work that we did. It's very exciting," said "Breaking Bad" actor and best supporting nominee Aaron Paul, who co-hosted the award announcement with Neil Patrick Harris, a last-minute substitute for "House of Cards" actress Kate Mara.

Actresses nominated for their drama series work include Robin Wright, "House of Cards"; Vera Farmiga, "Bates Hotel"; Michelle Dockery, "Downtown Abbey"; Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men"; Connie Britton, "Nashville"; and Kerry Washington, "Scandal." Claire Danes, last year's winner for "Homeland," also got a nod.

The nominees for best actor in a comedy are Jason Bateman, "Arrested Development"; Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"; Matt LeBlanc, "Episodes"; Don Cheadle, "House of Lies"; Louis C.K., "Louie"; and Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock."

Jon Cryer, last year's surprise winner for "Two and a Half Men," didn't make the cut this year.

Actresses competing for top comedy acting honors are Laura Dern, "Enlightened"; Lena Dunham, "Girls"; Edie Falco, "Nurse Jackie"; Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"; and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who claimed the trophy last year for "Veep."

Most of the 2012 trophy holders have a chance to repeat.

Maggie Smith was nominated again as best supporting actress in a drama for "Downton Abbey," which has brought her two trophies. Julie Bowen is up for supporting actress in a comedy for "Modern Family."

However, Eric Stonestreet, who claimed the supporting actor award last year for the show, was snubbed while castmates Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill and Ty Burrell got nods.

HBO received a leading 108 nominations, up a third over last year, followed by CBS and NBC with 53 each, ABC with 45, Showtime with 31 and AMC and FX Networks with 26 each. PBS has 24 and Fox received 19.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Emmy ceremony, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will air Sept. 22 on CBS.

HTC One Mini puts premium features in a small package

HTC

HTC One Mini

HTC

The HTC One Mini has a similar style to the One, but a smaller profile.

The HTC One was extremely well-received by critics, but for some, its 4.7-inch screen meant the phone was just too big. Lucky for them, HTC has released the One Mini, which combines many of the One's best features with a considerably smaller footprint.

One mini

HTC

The HTC One and One Mini.

The most visible change is certainly the screen size, which has been reduced to 4.3 inches, with a resolution of 720p versus the original's 1080p ? still extremely sharp and well above a "retina" resolution.

Inside, changes are a little more pronounced, although it's likely that only power users would truly know the differences: The processor is a slower (but still fast) 1.4GHz dual-core one, there's only half the RAM (but still plenty) with 1GB. There is also no stabilization on the camera and no NFC capabilities.

The one thing that may actually bother the everyday user is that the One Mini only comes with 16GB of storage space, and no room for a MicroSD card. So if you tend to carry around your music or movies with you, the One Mini might not be the best choice.

But despite dropping on a few key specs, the One Mini retains much of what made the One such a great phone: A solid metal body, big stereo speakers in front, and a nice (though not as revolutionary as it was billed) "Ultrapixel" camera on the back.

For phone buyers looking for a high quality device, but not willing to shell out quite so much cash or just interested in something more modest, the One Mini should be a good option. There's no pricing or availability information yet, but Germany and the U.K. will be getting the device first, at which time we should know more about how much you'll be able to pick one up for.

Russia Is Building an Inflatable Space Module of its Own

RKK Energia, the manufacturer of the Soyuz spacecraft and the prime contractor on the Russian part of the International Space Station, quietly published in its annual report last week details on an innovative inflatable space habitat.

Wrapped into multilayered synthetic skin instead of metal, the expandable module could be attached to the Russian part of the International Space Station and inflated like a beach ball, providing greater comfort for the crew and extra room for yet-to-be-disclosed experiments, RKK Energia's report said. Thanks to its compact size during the launch (the most expensive phase of any space mission), inflatable structures promise to deliver much more habitable volume per unit of mass than the one available inside the traditional spacecraft. According to Russian researchers, inflatable modules will provide three times more volume and 1.5 more surface area per unit of mass than traditional metal structures. Also, inflatable modules promise lighter and better micrometeoroid and radiation shielding than would metal spacecraft.

The Russian company began work on this exotic technology in 2011 using its own funds and is currently working on a scaled-down prototype. Eventually, RKK Energia hopes to get a contract from the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, to build the full-scale inflatable habitat. RKK Energia did not disclose any details about the composition or properties of the skin comprising its flexible structure beyond saying it would use domestically produced materials.

An official representative of RKK Energia, Anatoly Khabarov said in an email to PopMech that "? unfortunately, at present, our developers can not provide anything for publication." However documents we obtained show that the company had initially considered fitting the inflatable structure into its 7-ton Progress cargo ship, which has been routinely used to deliver supplies and propellant to the ISS. In the past, the Progress was also successfully employed to deliver new modules to the orbiting outpost.

A Short History of Space Inflatables

Although inflatable structures had never been widely used in space, they have attracted the attention of space architects since the dawn of the space era, as the most effective and economical way of creating a large pressurized habitat.

The USSR pioneered inflatable structures in space with a flexible air lock that was launched aboard the Voskhod-2 spacecraft in 1965. During that historic mission, the inflatable design enabled the world's first space walk, by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. Soviet engineers also used inflatable airbags to soften landings of its early lunar probes. More recently, a Russian firm tried (with mixed results) to return cargo from orbit using an inflatable heat shield. (One small experimental cargo did return to Earth successfully in 2000, but a larger inflatable device was lost during the reentry, and several further reentry attempts were aborted due to launch failures.)

It was NASA's Johnson Space Center, though, that has come closest to launching a manned inflatable module, to be called Transhab. Conceived as living quarters of a Mars-bound spacecraft, Transhab was intended to ride on the shuttle to the ISS to demonstrate the feasibility of inflatable technology. But because of financial and political problems, Congress killed the maverick project in 2000.

Since then, Nevada-based firm Bigelow Aerospace had acquired NASA's engineering heritage in the hope of building an orbital hotel for space tourists and commercial researchers. Bigelow's near-Earth facility would be comprised of several inflatable structures whose scaled prototypes had been successfully boosted in orbit in 2006 and 2007?ironically, aboard converted Russian ballistic missiles. Bigelow is also working with NASA to add a small inflatable structure to the American segment of the ISS that would stay in place for at least two years. The module is currently scheduled to ride to the station aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft in the summer of 2015.

The Hurdles

When we asked a Bigelow Aerospace representative about the news of these Russian plans, the reaction was a combination of surprise, excitement, and competitive spirit.

"It is a first time I've heard of this, I am very surprised ? wow!" Michael Gold, director of D.C. operations and business growth at Bigelow, told PopMech. "That would be outstanding [if Russia succeeds in the development of such a vehicle] ? it is a great technology and I am glad to see that if the world adapts it, it will really help space exploration and lower its cost, which, obviously, is really important in this fiscally constrained environment."

Gerard Valle, a specialist in inflatable structures at Johnson Space Center and veteran of the Transhab project, agreed that inflatable technology provides favorable volume-to-mass ratio when compared to traditional metal spacecraft. At the same time, he warned, developers still face major technical risks and high costs.

The biggest hurdle for inflatable habitats, Valle says, particularly those that would house humans in space, is overcoming "creep"?the slow deformation of a structure under stress. "We have a whole program with Langley (space center) to show that those materials are good (on creep issues)," Valle said, "(This problem) is common for all materials and you have the same concern with metal structures, but it is definitely a concern with inflatables and you have to understand it and you have to prove it." NASA scientists made special effort to come up with innovative methods of testing which could simulate decades of stress in just a few years or even months, Valle says.

Extreme temperatures in space would present additional hurdles. "If you are at the cold temperatures for the very long time, the module's flexible bladder will crack," he says. "Therefore you have to make sure that it either has heaters or you have a really good bladder."

Valle says only deep-space missions, such as an expedition to Mars, would ultimately justify the technical risks and expenses associated with inflatable spacecraft': "If you're just going to low Earth orbit, you can probably get by with a metal can."

Up to Speed

After a nearly decade-long hiatus caused by years of economic problems in the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union, numerous Russian space projects have been revived. RKK Energia's engineers are currently putting finishing touches on the 20-ton multipurpose laboratory that is scheduled to join the ISS before the middle of the next year. It would be followed within a year or two by an innovative Node Module, equipped with six docking ports for multiple "plug-in" spacecraft. RKK Energia recently released images of the flight version of the globular-shaped spacecraft being assembled at the company's workshops. With the Node Module's projected life span of several decades, Russian engineers would have practically unlimited opportunities and plenty of ports to expand their part of the space settlement with additional laboratories and habitats, including some inflatable.

Given the late start in the assembly of the Russian segment, the nation's space officials hinted that they had been considering separating the newest Russian modules of the outpost and leaving it in orbit after the deorbiting of the main portion of the ISS currently expected at the beginning of the 2020s.

Climate change could deprive Volta Basin of water needed to boost energy and food production

A new study released today finds that so much water may be lost in the Volta River Basin due to climate change that planned hydroelectric projects to boost energy and food production may only tread water in keeping up with actual demand. Some 24 million people in Ghana, Burkina Faso and four other neighboring countries depend on the Volta River and its tributaries as their principal source of water.

Specifically, the researchers with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and their partners concluded that the combined effects of higher temperatures and diminished rain could mean that by the year 2100, all of the current and planned hydroelectric projects in the basin would not even generate as much power as existing facilities do now. Meanwhile, there would only be enough water to meet about a third of irrigation demand.

IWMI and other centers involved with the CGIAR's Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) are drawing attention to the Volta study as leaders from across Africa gather in Ghana for Africa Agriculture Science Week 2013, under the theme "Africa Feeding Africa."

"An unreliable supply of water for irrigation will have serious consequences for a region where most people are farmers. Beyond that, there is an urgent need to shift more food production away from rain-fed systems that are subject to the vagaries of climate to irrigated agriculture. This study shows that this strategy is not as dependable as we once thought," said Matthew McCartney, PhD, a principal researcher and hydrologist at IWMI, which is part of CGIAR, an international consortium of agricultural research institutes. McCartney served as lead author for the study, The Water Resource Implications of Changing Climate in the Volta River Basin, along with colleagues from Ghana's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

Climate models show temperatures in the Volta Basin rising by up to 3.6 degrees Celsius over the next century?which the scientists warn could significantly increase water lost to evaporation. They also indicate average annual rainfall could drop by about 20 percent. McCartney and his colleagues calculated that water flows in the Volta region could fall by 24 percent through 2050 and by 45 percent by 2100, depriving the basin of water that countries are counting on to drive turbines and feed farms.

"The smart development of water resources is a crucial part of Africa feeding Africa, and we need to understand how climate change might alter water availability in vulnerable regions like the Volta Basin," said Robert Zougmor?, who leads CCAFS research in West Africa. "This study highlights the need for more innovation and cooperation in the Volta to make sure farmers in the region can adapt to these very challenging conditions caused by global warming." CCAFS funded the study along with Germany's Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The Volta River Basin encompasses 402,000 square kilometers. Most of this area is in Ghana and Burkina Faso, with the remainder in Benin, C?te d'Ivoire, Mali and Togo. The basin's population is expected to reach 34 million people by 2015, up from 19 million in 2000. Agriculture accounts for 40 percent of the basin's economic activity. As rains become less and less reliable in a changing climate, researchers and policy-makers have been exploring a shift to groundwater or other types of irrigation. Meanwhile, hydroelectric power plants are seen as crucial to sustaining industrial development and expanding economic opportunities.

The Volta Basin is already home to the massive Akosombo Dam, which created Lake Volta, the world's largest man-made lake by surface area, and fourth largest reservoir by volume. Also coming on-line is the controversial Bui Dam project, which is expected to add 400 megawatts of power to Ghana's strained power grid, along with 30,000 hectares of irrigated farmland. But the study predicts these projects and many others planned for the basin could fall far short of their potential due to climate change.

For example, it finds that by 2050, there would only be enough water for hydroelectric facilities to perform at about 50 percent of capacity. By the end of the century, there would be only enough to sustain about 25 percent. Irrigation projects would fare better, at least initially. The study finds that if all planned projects are completed, they could double water available for irrigation through 2050. But by 2100, as water losses accumulates, the system would be delivering only slightly more water than irrigation projects provide now, and not nearly enough to meet demand.

The study shows the loss of water in the basin would be especially challenging for poor farmers in rural areas, where agriculture is the primary provider of food and income. In addition to problems for large-scale irrigation projects, the small-scale irrigation that is common throughout the region would also be affected. The IWMI study warns that groundwater could become harder to utilize, "especially the shallow groundwater" typically used in rural communities.

McCartney cautioned that the predictions for water resources in the Volta are not absolute. But he said there are enough warning signs in the data that decision-makers need to be thinking of a more resilient mix of options for energy and agriculture to stand up to the climate challenge. For example, the study suggests considering a broader mix of renewable energy sources, including wind and solar. Water storage options should not be confined to projects that employ large dams, the researchers said. Equal consideration should be given to alternative water storage systems.

For farmers, McCartney said the solutions could include improving groundwater supplies available to rural areas by "recharging" local aquifers with water taken from rivers or reservoirs. This is a practice that is becoming increasingly popular in the water-stressed regions of the world. The study also calls for pursuing relatively simple, small-scale approaches to water storage, such as building small ponds on rural farms and using water tanks with roofs that reduce evaporation.

"Africa has the potential for innovation and solutions. We need to harness that innovation and combine it with solutions that we know work to feed Africa," said McCartney. "This week's conference will feature many of these solutions."
