The One Thing Every Writer Has Experienced Before

The One Thing Every Writer Has Experienced Before

Writer's block.

Oh. My. Gawd.

You open the word editor, place your fingers on the keyboard, and suddenly the despair sinks in. You can't visualize the story. You can't formulate the right words. There's this thick wad of ephemeral nothingness just sitting there, preventing the flow of words that you know so well and love so much from reaching the page. You wait for a while, hoping for something to come--anything--a piece of dialogue--anything--but the wad of nothingness just seems to grow thicker, forcing you out of your own mind. Gah! You throw up your hands in the air. Writer's block strikes again!

The wad of nothingness stays there for hours on end. Sometimes it lets up and you can crank out a sentence or two, but the words seem foreign, strange, lost in translation. You try to come up with something better, but everything sucks. All those years of practice and the best you could come up with was "he smiled happily at her happy smile"!?

You walk around the house, thinking over the story, fueling your muse. Finally you can see it: the dragon, swooping down from the tower, mouth wide, tongue ensnared with wicked embers. But you can't see the sentences. You can visualize it, but the vocabulary to accompany the actions is missing. You decide to try your hand at writing it anyway.

"Teh dragon flew to the ground, opened it mouth, breathed fire and burned all the soldiers. They dropped dramatically to the ground and died. the dragon spread its wings victoriously, the end."

You feel like you wrote something. You're staring at the period; you know you just wrote something. But why are you so afraid to look at it? What the heck did you just write!? Look at it!

GAH! IT BURNS!

You delete, you retype, you delete, you retype--but dangit, there is no hope; you've digressed down the evolutionary ladder and wound up somewhere on the lower rungs.

You bang your Neanderthalian skull against the metaphorical wall, trying fruitlessly to break the block. You do this for days. You do this for weeks. You do this for months, or even years. All you end up with is a brain tumor.

You browse the web, searching for help. You find sites for helping you write better prose, articles with some ideas for writer's block, forums, books, scrolls, grimoires, tomes--but none of them help.

This wad of nothingness is impenetrable. When it appears, all hope is lost. Fighting it is fruitless.

You cannot. Beat. Writer's block. This is the one realization I've come to...realize, and it's helped me tremendously. Don't fight writer's block, because you can't beat it. The only thing you can do is get through it.

Hearing brains are 'deaf' to disappearance of sounds, study reveals

Friday, September 28, 2012

Our brains are better at hearing new and approaching sounds than detecting when a sound disappears, according to a study published today funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.

Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.

Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' comprised of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or disappearance of different sound-objects within the melee.

Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound disappears. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.

Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the appearance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just disappeared. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps disappear. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'disappearance blindness'"

The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.

"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. For example, to aid the design of devices intended to help professionals such as air traffic controllers and pilots who operate in environments where the detection of change is critical," added Dr Chait.

Improving Small Business Customer Service Through Social Media ...

Friday, September 28th, 2012

NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? Social media has become a commonplace outlet for consumers to voice their queries, complaints or praise about a product or service, or seek resolution to a problem, bypassing automated phone systems and the routing process of a customer call center. For small businesses, this provides an alternative customer service channel ? one that is not only cost-effective, but also creates an opportunity for brand visibility.

'Sons of Anarchy' actor Johnny Lewis found dead

A young actor best known for a role on the hit motorcycle club series "Sons of Anarchy" has been found dead outside a Los Angeles home along with an elderly woman.

The L.A. coroner's office has identified the male found by police outside a home in the Los Feliz neighborhood on Wednesday as Jonathan Kendrick Lewis, 28, also known as Johnny Lewis. Officers responding to a report of a screaming woman came upon Lewis' body outside of the home on the driveway, while the body of the woman who was in her 70s was found inside the residence.

"He appeared to have died from some type of fall, either from the stairway, or from the balcony, or from one of the roofs," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told ABC News affiliate KABC.

"The best we're piecing together now is that it appears that some type of altercation occurred inside of the house resulting in the death of the woman. Then this individual ran outside, had an altercation with a couple of neighbors, ran back into the house and by the time we got here, he had fallen or had somehow died on the driveway," said Smith.

Lewis is considered a suspect in the homicide investigation, KABC reported. A neighbor and a handyman were badly beaten in a confrontation they had with the suspect.

The cause of death of the woman, who was in her 70s, has not yet been released, but Smith said that she had suffered major trauma. Smith said that though it is possible that Lewis was renting one of the rooms in the residence, police are still unsure, calling it "very preliminary."

Greg Sarian, a neighbor of the residence owned by the woman, said that she rented out rooms to boarders. He said that he became alarmed when he heard screams Wednesday morning.

"'Help, help,' from both sides, man and woman," Sarian said. "I was praying to God. 'God,' I said, 'Clean up this mess here, because this is evil place.' Evil place. All kind of people, by the way, coming, different people, coming, going couple of days, disappearing, coming, other people."

Lewis, who began acting in his teenage years, worked steadily in television in roles on "Boston Public," "American Dreams" and "The O.C." His career picked up steam when he landed the role of Kip 'Half Sack' Epps on two seasons of "Sons of Anarchy" and appeared alongside Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart in "The Runaways" in 2010.

Ancient burial shroud offers up surprise

Ancient scraps of fabric found in a grave in Denmark are not made of cultivated flax as once believed, but instead are woven from imported wild nettles, suggesting the grave's inhabitant may have traveled far for burial. ?

This discovery, announced Friday in the journal Scientific Reports, casts a new light on the textile trade in Bronze Age Europe, said study researcher Ulla Mannering, an archaeologist at the University of Copenhagen.

"Since the Stone Age, they had very well-developed agriculture and technology for producing linen textiles," Mannering told LiveScience. "So it's really unusual that a society which has established agriculture would also take in material from things that are not of the normal standardized agricultural production" ? in other words, wild plants.

A luxurious shroud
The soft and shiny fabric dates back to between 940 B.C. and 750 B.C., making it about 2,800 years old. It was discovered in Voldtofte, Denmark, at a rich Bronze Age burial ground called Lusehoj. The Bronze Age ran from about 3200 B.C. to 600 B.C. in Europe.

The fabric was wrapped around a bundle of cremated remains in a bronze urn. It was a luxurious piece of material, Mannering said. [ 10 Weird Ways We Deal With the Dead ]

"The fibers we get from the European nettle are very, very fine and soft and shiny, and we often say this is a sort of prehistoric silk textile," Mannering said. (Silk, made from insect cocoons, is known for its shimmery texture.)

Previous analysis pegged the Danish fabric as woven from flax, a plant widely cultivated in the region. But along with nanophysicist Bodil Holst of the University of Bergen in Norway, Mannering and her colleagues used advanced methods to reanalyze the scraps of cloth. By studying the fiber orientation as well as the presence of certain crystals found in plants, the researchers were able to learn that the fabric is not flax at all, but nettle, a group of plants known for the needlelike stingers that line their stems and leaves.

Nor is the nettle local, Mannering said. Different soil regions contain different variations of elements. The variation of one of these elements, strontium, found in the fabric, was not local to Denmark, suggesting the plants the textile was made from grew elsewhere.

There are a few regions that match the strontium profile, the researchers found, but the most likely candidate is southwest Austria. The bronze burial urn holding the remains is from Austria, Mannering said, and it makes sense that the fabric might be too.

A well-traveled man?
Despite these imported grave goods, the remains appear to be those of a Danish man, Mannering said. The personal objects in the grave, such as two razors, suggest he was a Scandinavian, albeit perhaps a well-traveled one, she said.

"Maybe he died in Austria and was wrapped in this Austrian urn and Austrian textile and was brought back to Denmark in this condition and then put in a big burial mound," Mannering said. "The personal objects that were placed inside the urn together with this textile and the bones indicate that he is a male of Scandinavian origin, but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have died abroad."

Bronze Age Europeans lived an agricultural life and traded many goods with one another, especially the bronze that gave the era its name, Mannering said. The nettle fabric may have been an ancient luxury good for Bronze Age elite, she said.

"It shows that they also knew how to get fibers from wild plants, and they wanted these fibers probably because of their very different and unique appearance," she said.

Wall-Ye robot does grunt work at vineyards

20 hrs.

Winemaking is the latest industry to be hit by robot?fever: French inventors have created a robot that rolls among the grapevines, checking and perhaps pruning as it goes.

A wine grower in France complained three years ago to?Christophe Millot that they were always short on staff. Millot designed the Wall-Ye robot, which is indeed named after Pixar's trash-collecting WALL-E, and the pair have been working together on it ever since.

Wall-Ye moves around on treads and is equipped with a number of cameras for navigation and inspection of vines.?It navigates by GPS, but also recognizes each plant individually and can carry out?special instructions or follow up on previous work.

There are plans to make it able to prune vines and eventually pick grapes, but for now it is limited to less complicated tasks. But checking for bugs, disease, temperature variations and soil problems are important parts of running a vineyard ? and they can be tedious.

Another winemaker, Claire Gazeau-Montrasi, explains in the AFP video above?that she would welcome a robot that took care of the most boring jobs. Like a Roomba or similar household robot, it can do its job slowly but surely, working around its owner's schedule.

At ?25,000, or around $32,000, Wall-Ye isn't cheap, though there are larger and more expensive systems that are capable of more. Automation of agriculture hasn't made it to vineyards quite yet because of the delicate nature of the task, but that may soon change, with?robots like Wall-Ye leading the charge.

His knowledge of finance, technology, marketing, and management experience combined, allow him to be a tremendous asset to both owners and tenants alike.

To Josh, this is one of the highest compliments paid as when a person says this, you know you?re doing something right.

According to Josh, one of the most important virtues of the real estate business is operating with trust and integrity.

?Property management sometimes generates situations that can be challenging at times, being up front, ethical, trustworthy, and ensuring that there is a lot of communication is one key to being highly successful,? said Josh.

Getting Your Ex To Chase You - How It Is Done

Getting Your Ex To Chase You - How It Is Done

Getting your ex back isn't as easy as pestering them and making your presence known until they return to you. It simply doesn't work like that. If you chase the person that you love after a breakup then you are driving a bigger wedge between you and them. The bull in a china shop approach is not the right way to go. STOP, think about what you are doing, and break off the chase.

In the immediate aftermath of a breakup it is almost instinctive to make every attempt that you possibly can to contact your ex. You may call them, text them, e-mail them, send them Facebook messages, even appear on their doorstep, and all to no avail. You have to resist the urge, you have to remind yourself that every time you pester your ex the less your chances of getting back with them will be.

Breaking Contact To Make Contact

This may seem counterproductive but the only way to restore contact with your ex is to stop attempting to contact them, keep your distance and drop off their radar. When you are constantly in your ex's inbox, or constantly ringing, you are inadvertently reinforcing the breakup and strengthening their resolve to remain apart from you. Your ex doesn't want to talk to you right now, you will have to face up to that fact and accept it. That may be a hard pill to swallow, but it will glean results.

You have to give your ex the time needed to start missing you. There is no doubt that your ex still harbors feelings for you, but right now it is easier for your ex to suppress those feelings than face you and talk to you. At this stage of the game you have to retreat in order to strengthen your position. When you disappear from your ex's life you will set the stage for your return. You want to make your ex chase you.

Taking A Step Back

When you step back and retreat from your ex you will be doing five things that will improve your position -

1, You will be giving yourself the time needed to get your emotions in order and plan your next steps. Success depends on you being cool, calm, and collected.

2, You will be giving your ex the time and space that they will need to start missing you and re-remembering the things that he/she loves about you.

3, You will be reflecting on the mistakes that caused the breakup. Reflection is essential. If you want to make a success of the relationship in the future you will have to recognize what the events that led to the breakup were.

4, You will have the time and space needed to re-discover yourself as an individual. It is very important that you know who you are if you want to be part of a functioning relationship.

5, You will find out if what you feel is true love. As the old saying goes - absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Getting Your Ex To Chase You

Getting your ex to chase you is not as hard as you may initially think. By far the hardest thing to do is back off and accept the breakup. When you accept the breakup you will release the pressure that your ex was under, you will be unlocking the door to reconciliation.

After a period of no contact your ex's feelings for you will start to come back to the surface. Your ex will start to miss you, they will wonder what you are doing and how you are feeling. Eventually curiosity will get the better of them, your ex will pluck up the courage to contact you.

The stage is now set to get your ex to chase you. You will now be in a position to go to the next level and get your relationship back. The initial contact stage has to be played very carefully. You will have to keep it cool and casual to begin with in order not to spook your ex.

What Steps Should I Take?

Being dumped is one of the worst experiences that a person will go through in their life. The feeling of emptiness that accompanies an unwanted breakup can be difficult to deal with and at times overwhelming. You are at a vulnerable stage in the immediate aftermath of a breakup. This is the time when most people let do their heart do all the thinking. In order to get your relationship back on track you have to know how to avoid the breakup mistakes that a lot of people in your position make.

It is also imperative that you learn about the no contact rule and exactly how to put it into operation. The no contact rule will be the most formidable card in your deck. Used correctly it will help produce the result that you desire - reconnection with your ex, and the recommencement of your relationship.

Call Me Maybe (or NOT!) ? Larry James' CelebrateLove.com BLOG

In every relationship it is important to communicate or stay in touch with your loved one. Today there are many ways to stay in touch.

A new device hits the market and everything changes ? but, really, not everything changes. Communication itself has not changed; it is the means we actually use to communicate that changes almost daily.

tincanphonesAt a recent trip to a fast-food place I observed a couple, probably in their 50?s. They were chowing down for about 25 minutes. She was on her cell phone for the first 4 or 5 minutes. On my way to get a drink refill I noticed that he was playing Angry Birds on his smart phone. She did most of the talking, mostly asking yes and no questions. Her voice was loud. If you don?t want anyone to hear your conversation don?t use your phone in restaurants. Chances are those near you don?t want to hear your conversation either. I only heard him utter 4 words during their dinner: ?Huh?,? ?Yeah,? ?Yep,? and ?Okay.? Several times he just shook his yes instead of speaking. How sad. Do your best to never let your relationship slip into a ?no communication? mode.

There are many ways to communicate nowadays. From smart phones, text messaging (a text cannot only be misunderstood but also misread and misinterpreted), Skype, webcams, Facebook, Twitter and e-mail, the facilitation of communication has never been more available. The way cell phones are made today you can do just about anything with them; you can talk, send text messages, take pictures, video record, voice record, listen to radio, download and play Mp3?s, and surf the internet. There has been more and more discussion about how this technology is affecting our relationships and interaction with people in our everyday lives.

coupletalking2Divided attention and distraction are only two of the issues. The lack of visual cues including gestures, facial expressions and posture creates challenges. Miscommunication is another common problem. Not having a phone nearby seems to help foster closeness, connectedness, interpersonal trust, and perceptions of empathy ? the building-blocks of relationships.

Don?t make your phone the lifeline for your love life. Sharing emotions over the phone could threaten your relationship, a new Purdue University study found. When far-apart couples revealed feelings, they were less likely to idealize each other, which can lead to dissatisfaction. ?If self-disclosure isn?t accompanied by body language, it can be hard to convey understanding,? says study author Ji-Yeon Lee, PhD. If she unloads over the phone, you would be wise to describe your ?physical? reaction by saying, ?I wish I could hug you,? or ?I wish you were here with me now, etc.? This requires really paying attention to what your partner is saying. Not actively listening is a pure form of disrespect. That is often easy to do in long conversations by phone.

Another recent set of studies by Andrew K. Przybylski and Netta Weinstein of the University of Essex showed that our phones can hurt our close relationships. Amazingly, they found that simply having a phone nearby, without even checking it, can be detrimental to our attempts at interpersonal connection.

It?s one thing to use the phone to occasionally stay in touch, however, if you are spending the day with people you really care about, you might want to reconsider the next time you reach for your phone to reply to a text message or check sports scores.

?For couples in which things have been so difficult that they both are considering ending the relationship, problems arising from a difficult phone conversation may push their relationship to the tipping point,? says University of Minnesota professor, Paul Rosenblatt.

pillowtalkFace to face is always best. When communicating face to face, nonverbal behaviors provide context clues for the words we use. Sarcasm and jokes without nonverbal context cues can cause frustration. So, it?s best to use your phone for short, quick check-ins instead of long conversations. Long phone conversations seem to inhibit feelings of intimacy you?d otherwise get when you?re sitting face-to-face with someone.

Dr Daniel Kruger, University of Michigan, the lead author of another study, said that women?s desire for communication, emotional bonding and affection is at peak when their partners fell asleep after having a passionate session of love.

?Rarely is there a time when it is appropriate to withhold relevant communication in a love relationship. Communication is too important to take casually. Say what you mean. Say what you feel in a loving way and say it nevertheless. When you say what you know needs to be said, you will never have to worry about saying the wrong thing.? ~ Larry James

Secret revelations about yourself to your love partner; the relevant truth ? meaning revelations that relate to the love relationships? well being ? make for intimate conversation that can assist a healthy love relationship to grow more passionate and deeply more intimate.

P.S. Pillow-talk is fun too! ;-) Pillow talk plays a vital role in happy relationships.

NFL 2012

Packers Seahawks Football

Officials discuss the final play of the game as Green Bay Packers' Charles Woodson, second from right, and Seattle Seahawks' Earl Thomas, right, leave the field.

AP Photo/Ted S. Warren

This, to me, is the iconic photo of last night. More so even than?the side judge signaling touchdown while the back judge waves his hands over his head.?As the video booth checks the replay, the officiating crew gathers for what looks like a heated discussion. An argument, you might even say. The field judge (102) jaws with the line judge (59, number partially visible). The two officials who actually made the call are silent. The head linesman stands away from the huddle. The referee is nowhere to be seen.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about these replacement officials, be they formerly amateur, arena, or lingerie, is how little we know about them. In the old days, refereeing assignments would be announced a few days before the weekend?just another page in the media packet. But now that everybody wants to talk about the refs, and learn their backstories, the NFL has made that information a lot harder to come by.

We're used to checking FootballZebras.com for the crew assignments, but even they have been at a loss. "We are expecting to get the officiating assignments piecemeal," they have warned every week, and even now?their Week 3 list has holes.?(If anyone knows who refereed the Jags-Colts game, please let them know.)

Why does it matter? Accountability. For all their mistakes in the first two weeks, we have no idea if the NFL has been punishing those officials by reassigning them or releasing them. We have no idea if the NFL cares when these guys screw up, or are even paying attention.

And, of course, there?s the fact that outcomes?worth hundreds of millions of dollars?are being overseen by officials with less-than-comforting backgrounds.

Here are the men who called last night?s game:

Rhone-Dunn, the back judge who had the best view of the play and initially signaled interception, is the most experienced member of the crew. Formerly a Big 12 official, he?worked the Sugar Bowl back in 2007?and arena games since then. Easley, the side judge who overruled Rhone-Dunn, is a banker from California,?who has officiated high school and junior college games,?both football and basketball. Elliott, the head referee who should have gotten his crew together and asked them what they saw before signaling for a touchdown, is a real estate agent in Texas who has worked high school, college, and indoor football.

This was the same crew for last week's Rams-Redskins game?one that got out of hand,?and caused Mike Shanahan to tell reporters, "Never have I been involved in a game like this."

Will this crew be disciplined? Broken up? Sent to re-education camp to watch film, or docked salary, or let go altogether? We might never know. Because the NFL wants you to put your trust in it?even after?a huge Saints fan was assigned to work a Saints game, and an official who drew paychecks from the Seahawks for three years?worked a Seahawks game. I know what's best for the league, Roger Goodell whispers. Forget those silly questions about the refs, and while you're at it, forget about asking what the actual Bountygate evidence is, or what the league is doing about brain trauma. Trust the NFL.

Research lacking on drugs for older children with autism - KFDA ...

By Serena Gordon
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Sept. 24 (HealthDay News) -- More and more children are growing up with autism, and although many treatments and interventions are now available, clinical studies on the use of medications in teens and young adults are lacking, according to new research.

"The majority of (older) individuals with autism spectrum disorders appear to be taking medications that we have very little evidence for," said the study's lead author, Dr. Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, medical director of the Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders at the Vanderbilt Brain Institute in Nashville, Tenn.

"In the absence of sufficient evidence, parents and people with autism should find a clinician who tells you what's known and unknown about the potential benefits and risks of any medication," he said. "It should be a shared decision-making process."

Results of the study were published online on Sept. 24 in the journal Pediatrics.

Autism spectrum disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders that impair social development and communication. Autism spectrum disorders also may cause repetitive movements and even self-abusive behavior, such as head banging, according to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

It is estimated that about one in 88 American children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder

As children with autism age, some do experience significant improvements, according to NINDS, but many do not. There is no cure for autism, although there are many treatments available, including education and behavioral interventions and medications.

Medications usually are used to treat some of the symptoms associated with autism, rather than the core symptoms of the condition, according to background information in the new study. For example, the medication risperidone (brand name Risperdal) may be used to treat behavioral symptoms associated with autism, such as aggression, outbursts and irritability, said Dr. Melissa Nishawala, medical director of the Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinical and Research Program at the NYU Child Study Center in New York City.

"Medications like risperidone and aripiprazole don't address the cause of autism, but they help calm down [people with autism]," Veenstra-VanderWeele said.

For the new study, the researchers reviewed medical literature from 1980 through 2011 to find clinical trials on drugs for people with autism between the ages of 13 and 30 years old. They found eight studies with at least 20 participants. Two investigators independently assessed the quality of the studies.

The researchers said they found four studies of fair quality while the other four were poor. The studies included reviews of antipsychotic medications, such as risperidone and haloperidol (Haldol); serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluvoxamine (Luvox) and clomipramine (Anafranil); and opioid receptor agonists, such as naltrexone (Depade).

The researchers felt that, overall, there wasn't enough data on medications in the teen and young adult autism population. Risperidone wasn't well studied in teens and young adults, but there was evidence for its use if the entire pediatric population was considered, the study said.

Although behavioral and educational interventions weren't included in the new study, Veenstra-VanderWeele said he suspects there's a lack of evidence for these types of treatments in older children and young adults too.

"We really don't know if intensive behavior interventions continue to benefit individuals as they get older," he said.

NYU's Nishawala said: "The most important thing for parents to take away is that we know there are a few medications that have been studied that can help. Certain symptoms like irritability, agitation and aggression can be controlled with medications, but there's lesser evidence that repetitive behaviors can be treated."

Nishawala added that although she and others who treat older children and young adults with autism would love to have more evidence-based research on the medications they use, it can be difficult to get parents and older children to participate in clinical trials when medications are already available to them for what's known as "off-label" use. That's when doctors prescribe medications for a condition for which the drug has yet to receive U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.

In addition, she said, it's difficult to get funding for trials, particularly when a drug already has been approved.

Gummy Lump Toys Blog: Kids Summer Scrapbook Craft Activity

Capture Summer Memories with a Kids Summer Scrapbook by Natalie from SippyCupMom?
for Ages 4 and up with Adult Participation and Supervision

We had so many fun times this last summer: weekend family vacations, get-togethers and even just hanging out in the kiddie pool in the afternoon sun! One thing that I love is hearing my kids recount all these fun times from their own memory. How fun would it be to have them create little scrapbooks of their favorite events!?

Supplies:?

Time Needed:

20 minutes+

Prep:

Cut about 5 white sheets of paper in half creating 8.5" by 5.5" pieces. Cut the Construction Paper to the same size and sandwich the white paper between making a book. Sew the edge. I used a zigzag stitch and bright yellow thread for the fun of it!

Instructions:

Give each child a scrapbook, a glue stick and the markers. Spread the pictures out in the middle of the table and ask your kids to choose pictures that show their favorite memories of the summer.?

After gluing the pictures down, encourage them to decorate the pages with the markers. If they are older, they can even write a short sentence or even just a word describing the picture. Have them decorate the cover and add a title, such as, "Maddy's Summer".?

I really enjoyed hearing about our summer from my children's point of view! It was sweet to hear about what stood out to them as the most fun. They could take this scrapbook to school and show their classmates and teacher when asked, "What did you do last summer?"?

If children are too young or for some other reason do not have the attention span to decorate the pages with markers, you could get stickers to make this easier. Just make sure you use this valuable time to talk with your children and listen to what they found the most memorable!

I love crafting, scrapbooking, drawing, jewelry making, soap making and cake decorating. And now I have three silly little helpers to assist in these projects! My oldest is a bubbly, artistic girl, the middle child is a sweet little boy who draws rocket ships and race cars and the youngest divides her time between actually coloring and attempting to eat the crayons!??I share my fun crafting adventures on the Sippy Cup Mom blog in my "Make It Pretty Wednesdays" segment. In addition to this, we write about life with kids, travel, reviews, giveaways and much more!

State Dept. slams report on ambassador's diary

A State Department spokesman sharply criticized CNN on Saturday, saying the network had reported on the diary of American ambassador Christopher Stevens after his death at the U.S. consulate in Libya despite the objections of his family.

State Department spokesman Philippe Reines said CNN took Stevens' personal journal from the site where he and three other Americans were killed in an armed attack in Benghazi on Sept. 11 and used it in reporting on the story despite the express wishes of his family members.

"Whose first instinct is to remove from a crime scene the diary of a man killed along with three other Americans serving our country, read it, transcribe it, email it around your newsroom for others to read, and only when their curiosity is fully satisfied thinks to call the family or notify the authorities?" Reines said in a statement.

CNN responded that it did not initially report on the existence of the journal out of respect for the family, but ultimately "felt there were issues raised in the journal which required full reporting."

"We think the public had a right to know what CNN had learned from multiple sources about the fears and warnings of a terror threat before the Benghazi attack which are now raising questions about why the State Department didn't do more to protect Ambassador Stevens and other U.S. personnel," CNN said in a written statement emailed to Reuters.

"Perhaps the real question here is why the State Department is now attacking the messenger," CNN said in the statement.

Protesting Libyans overrun militant compound

In a story posted on its website, CNN reported that it found the journal on the floor of the consulate compound, which it said was "largely unsecured."

CNN described the diary as seven pages of handwriting in a hand-bound book and said it contained tips about the situation in Libya that the network corroborated with other sources.

Many Muslims denouncing anti-Islam film decry violent protests, too

In his statement, Reines said that CNN staffers asked Stevens' family members at least several times in phone calls if the network could report on the contents and were repeatedly told that the family wanted to see it first.

"But the Stevens family was never given that chance. I guess four days was as long as CNN could control themselves, so they just went ahead and used it. Entirely because they felt like it," he said.

UN Security Council concerned about "terrorists" in Mali

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council expressed grave concern on Friday at the "increasing entrenchment of terrorist elements" in northern Mali, including al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, and urged all rebel groups to cut ties with the Islamist extremists.

The 15-member Security Council also noted an appeal by West Africa's regional body for targeted sanctions to be adopted in a bid to help end Mali's crisis and said it would consider further measures if necessary.

Mali descended into chaos in March when soldiers toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled Tuareg rebels to seize nearly two-thirds of the impoverished, landlocked country.

Islamist groups, some allied with al Qaeda, then hijacked the rebellion in the north to impose sharia law.

The Security Council said in a statement it was gravely concerned "about the continuing deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the North of Mali and the increasing entrenchment of terrorist elements including Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and affiliated groups."

The council urged "all Malian rebel groups to cut off all ties to AQIM and affiliated groups."

It also expressed "grave concern about the violations of human rights perpetrated by rebel and extremist groups in the North of Mali."

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is gearing up for a tough fight to help Mali's government forces reclaim the north, telling the Security Council on Monday it needs major military equipment including fighter jets.

ECOWAS and the African Union need a Security Council mandate to send in troops. In June the council asked them to clearly spell out the objectives of such an operation and how it would be carried out.

The council expressed in Friday's statement a "readiness to consider a feasible and actionable proposal from ECOWAS."

Mali's interim leader, Dioncounda Traore, made a formal request to ECOWAS this month for military assistance to help retake the country's north.

ECOWAS has intervened militarily in past African conflicts, including the wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The conflict in Mali has exacerbated a deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in the turbulent Sahel region - a belt of land spanning nearly a dozen of the world's poorest countries on the southern rim of the Sahara - where drought has pushed millions to the brink of starvation.

A high-level meeting on the situation in the Sahel is due to be held next week during the U.N. General Assembly.

?Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.??--Ayn Rand
