In September this year, Australian Civil-Military Centre?s Chief of Staff Lily Mulholland and Civil-Military Projects Manager Amy Sheridan?travelled?to Helsinki, Finland, to participate in the 18^th Annual International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres Conference (IAPTC).

The IAPTC is a voluntary association of training centres and other organisations dealing with peace operations research, education, and training. This year?s conference was co-hosted by the Crisis Management Centre (CMC) Finland and the Finnish Defence Forces International Centre (FINCENT) and attracted more than 200 participants from 48 countries. The theme of the 2012 conference was ?Effective Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding: Challenges for the Training Community?.

One of primary motivations for attending the conference was to screen and distribute the joint Australian Government and UN Women documentary ? Side By Side: Women, Peace and Security and accompanying Educational Toolkit. The documentary is an educational tool for pre-deployment peacekeepers, humanitarians and others interested in the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

The documentary incorporates statements by senior United Nations leaders including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, peacekeepers, activists and women who have experienced and survived conflict.? It outlines the role that women play in preventing violence and building peace as well as ideas for how women can be agents of change.

The reaction to the documentary was extremely positive and feedback focused on the effectiveness of the documentary?s format, which interlocutors said helps students engage on a deeper level with the subject matter.?The global appeal of the documentary was clear when the centre received offers to translate the documentary into Japanese, Spanish, Russian and Swahili.
