There are some bad spots in the UK construction sector. Housing has seen a 24% decline, education building projects a 23% decline, and public works projects have seen a 7% decline from last year (2010). While this news seems depressing, it is not surprising. The economy is still on very shaky ground with the euro zone debt crisis and a shaky US economy. Although this side of the numbers is not great, there are definitely bright spots in the construction trade.

While it may seem that the housing starts paint a picture of doom and gloom, everything is not bad. The bright spots are that social housing is up by 19%, and health projects have increased by 17%. These are some pretty impressive numbers and show us where the areas of opportunities are. These numbers should not be surprising though, because of the shaky economy there is more need for social housing, and because the population is aging there is more need for extended care facilities. Another area where we?re seeing distinctive patterns of growth is in the southern part of the country. The Southeast, Southwest, and West Midlands have all experienced construction gains in the last year.

If you?re in the construction business, this means you need to consider a retraining and retooling. When the economy shifts, you need to shift to meet its demands. For those who are willing to do that, the rewards are great. Remember, that in most adversities there is a positive side. But you have to find it, prepare for it, and take advantage of it.

Owning a business during challenging economic times can be frightening and frustrating, but there is always opportunity for those who are willing to take it all. Right now in the UK that opportunity is in social housing, and medical projects. These are the bright spots in the construction trade at the moment.
