New technologies emerging faster than IT managers can cope: survey ...

Two-thirds of IT managers in UK admit they can't handle cloud and mobile computing

A majority (81%) of in-house IT managers of UK companies say that they are struggling to keep up with new technologies, according to a new research IT service provider Equanet.

The survey was carried out in April 2011 and polled 2,030 IT managers throughout the UK. It found that nearly two-thirds (61%) of IT managers feel they lack the skills in handling new technologies such as cloud and mobile computing. The managers said they require up-to-date training to feel confident with new and emerging IT.

New technologies such as cloud computing and virtualisation are areas of particular concern for the managers. Nearly half (44%) of IT managers struggle with virtualisation, while slightly less (38%) face problems with cloud computing.

Coventry-based NP Aerospace, one of the largest thermosetting moulding companies in Europe, is adopting a virtualisation model.

NP Aerospace IT manager commented, "While we are all reasonably technical, we're not experts in the virtual field."

The study also found that while 81% admitted that they often encounter problems they are not adequately trained to deal with, a small fraction (4%) of IT managers are confident that they can handle all technical issues they encounter on the job.

The study also found that the average UK business is losing 7.5 days every year to IT downtime. The report states that a possible reason for this could be because technology is moving at a faster pace than IT managers can prepare for.

Rise Technical Recruitment founder Jeff Leng said, "Everything we do is online; it's the biggest success factor after decent staff. We can lose up to ?5k if our email is down for half a day."

Equanet managing director Phil Birbeck said as the study shows, companies throughout the UK are losing significant down-time as a result of computer related problems, stemming from the fact that IT managers are struggling to keep up-to-date with their skills.

Birbeck said, "In our experience, we have found that most IT issues are relatively straight-forward to solve given the correct training or deploying specialists when required. Organisations simply cannot afford the constant training required to keep up to date with technology, and as a result IT managers feel they are lacking the appropriate support to do a good job."
