'Christmas Story' to tour

The tuner version of 1983 pic "A Christmas Story" has lined up a five-city U.S. tour for the holiday season, hitting the road in a staging to which Peter Billingsley, the original star of the film, is attached as one of the producers. Warren Carlyle has signed on as helmer-choreographer following two earlier productions of the musical, in Seattle and Kansas City, directed by Eric Rosen. Songwriting team also has changed over the course of the tuner's development, with original composer Scott Davenport Richards replaced for the 2010 Seattle production by current duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Joseph Robinette penned the book. Plot of the musical follows a young boy desperate to get a BB gun for Christmas. Tour launches in Hershey, Penn., prior to stops in Detroit; Raleigh, N.C.; Tampa, Fla.; and Chicago. Commercial producers attached also include Gerald Goehring, Roy Miller, Michael Mitri and Pat Addiss. Seasonal runs of holiday-themed musicals have become increasingly common on Broadway, with "Elf" and "Irving Berlin's White Christmas" as recent examples. No New York plans have been set for "Christmas Story."
